Ezee Flames

i am in the process of doing a jessie james tank an oversize rear gaurd and a small front gaurd for a harley chop, well the guy wants white real flames on a carbon black met background.

heres what i came up with to show him ,i did these useing a marker pen and a retractable pencil as freehand shields ,all you have to do is spray at the base and follow the profile of the round object .

it gives a sharp to soft edge and multiple shadows and depth looks almost 3D to me

and another of my painting by numbers jobs

Re: Ezee Flames

These are interesting and have some real potential but right now I feel they look a little too uniform for flames.

Re: Ezee Flames

Well, yes, but none of the flames I've seen look like real fire anyway. Except Ponno's 9/11 tribute. hehehe

This looks pretty cool tho. I'd say DO IT!

Thanks for the tips!

Re: Ezee Flames

yes it is a bit uniform and i will be toying around with different sized pens dowl etc

it is a compromise between real and styized,as to get a true fire effect takes layering of candies over white [as you all know] which was an option denied me by the customer wanting white only

i think this can be played with and improved on,the technique of useing three dimentional objects as shields although not new and i would not claim it to be,doese lend itself to creating some very nice seamless sharp to soft effects

i personaly like this effect and hopefully my customer will as well.

im going to use it again on othere jobs as its fast effective and can be built upon ,take a closer look at some of the smaller flames and they give a very good 3d effect that could be used for other aplications!
heres a daylight image showing better colour

Re: Ezee Flames

heres another test piece done on carboard so its far less defined but more random and gives a good idea of the posabilities of this type of technique

Re: Ezee Flames

nice link and decent flames thank you Christer ,these are the basic shadeing for realflame by the look of it and to be fair this guy has got a bigger canvas to play on so can get the depth and layering going a little easier

i think on a bike tank it could be too subtle almost like marbleing, this is the reason i have gone for a stylized compromise to gain some contrast or pop as its comonly refered too

its up to the customer in the end but if he dont like these then im sure someone else will

as a design that doesnt claim to be true flame i think it works and as a technique its fast and simple
