Waterlillies WIP
Scraffito(or wahtever it is called)
played around on a piece of oil paper (it's like canvas only nicer, but cheaper)
first to get the technique right. base colours plain acrylics.
then bright clear colours in rough shapes, payne's gray(Atelier Interactives) over top and scraped/scratched away with end of brush and plastic palette knife.
I am really pleased with it. the edges will end up brighter and the water lilly the lightest(light pthalo layer only)
size 40c40cm, 16"x16".
all C&C most welcome, pull up a pew!

Re: Waterlillies WIP
I really like what you have going here. Scratchboard fascinates me as it produces some lovely work. To see you do something similar in acrylics will be most interesting.

Re: Waterlillies WIP
thanks Anne, here's the last of the paynes gray applied, there will be some refining no doubt once the lillies go down properly with tonal changes, but I am pretty happy leaving it kind of spontaneous.
I also have some scratchboard to play with, but won't be doing that for a while....

Re: Waterlillies WIP
This is looking very interesting Gill,
Lot of nice texture and looks like the waterlily is going to be luminous!

Re: Waterlillies WIP
Woohoo - these are certainly going to attract attention - good luck -
just sold my second painting on trade - me ( the first didn't really count as my sister ended up buying it) - have sent it off to the couriers and am now waiting to hear whether they like it in real life ...... a bit nervous and also excited.....

Re: Waterlillies WIP
I love seeing your experiments. I really like that scratching (sgraffito ?) technique. I've done it with oil pastels and only a bit with acrylics. The glowing edges is similar to an effect with the photo editing software I have where you can select the edges in a photo and make them glow like neon

Ruth! GO YOU, I am so pleased for you and really surprised you haven't sold heaps, but it's a hard road to sell at present on TM, waaay too many large cheap paintings about.. they are going to ADORE your artwork..
EP That's really cool you watch my experiemnts! I cannot ever seem to settle on one way of painting
Yes it is similar to glowing edge, I've seen those effects. I didn't know I was going to do this technique till I tried to get the effect I wanted and learnt by process that's how it would work.....

Re: Waterlillies WIP
hmm, don't paintings surprise you? As soon as I started in on shaping those lillies, I knew I had no idea where I was going with them!!
Sooo. I think you are joining me on a how-to-resolve-this journey! Lillies are too stark...
First step may be to get rid of the white I think....so in with the blues....
Colours/lighting not too true here, since it's evening...

Re: Waterlillies WIP
Cool technique, looks kind of like something we did in school when I was a kid. Really gives the picture a glowing look.
I wouldn't know where to go with the lilies. Will be interesting to see what you do with it.
