tough decision tonight....

Just had to get out tonight to paint....or so I thought. Drove to the Peshtigo River about 15-20 minutes from my house. A typical northern Wisconsin scene here. But...when I got to spots I had anticipated to be good, the sun was already too low for any time worth setting up.

Well...did the next best thing- grabbed the ole' trout spinning rod, and proceeded to at least fish awhile. Pretty area though...
Our seniors gradutate tomorrow...so, I think weather permitting I'll be out painting Sunday and/or Monday.

As a visible testimony to the strange prolonged cold season we've had...today is May 25th, kids are graduating, and this photo looks like it could have been taken late last fall. The buds have barely started to come out on the trees.

The waters are still running high from winter run off, so too deep and fast for decent trout fishing. Still, it was pleasant to get out.

I'll have to remember to keep some more 6" x 9"'s with me though, because even with only 30 minutes of light left, I might have captured a simple color expression of this.

I should share that a few of us up here know how to measure our northern sun and how much time of daylight we have left. As a painter that comes in handy, as a outdoorsman, it tells me how much time I have to comfortably get out of the woods. Don't know how it would work in other parts of the world, but I suppose you could experiment.

I hold my hand out at arm's length, and turn my hand in...fingers horizontal. I count how many fingers/hand widths there are beneath the bottom of the sun, and the horizon of the earth. Each finger is 15 minutes of time. So, if there are three fingers, I have 45 minutes left. Try it...

Larry

Larry, Can't wait to try the finger trick! With daylight savings time, I have enough light to find a spot to paint after dinner's over. I've been itching to try it and I'll let you know how the finger test works in Florida. I've got pretty fat fingers, so I'll let you know Carly!

Hi Larry,

Love this tip...going to try it out. How does it work for medium-sized fingers? I smell a poll coming on

OK. I tried the finger thing last night and it was much longer than 15 minutes a finger. Maybe it depends on how close to your face your hand is? I know my fingers are fat, so if that had anything to do with it then it should have been shorter.

I will suspect Brenda, that being your southerly position is closer to the equator and the sun thus being perceived particularly higher in the sky and the oblong shape of the earth greater there that you will have a different time measure.

The 15 minute thing works fine here in the north....but, still... it will be a relative constant for everyone, but you'll have to find out what that is.

Next time...make your measurements, note your watch, then see exactly when the sun sets and it becomes dusk. Do the math. I'll be curious to see what you come up with.

Since your fingers are not likely to do any more growing as an adult...you'll have a good and useful tool for yourself.

As Diane said...it would be interesting to do a poll, as I'm sure it might be a bit different for us depending on the part of the globe we are located. -Larry

OK Larry. I'm planning to do a sunset painting tonight if the weather holds, so I will try and do a more scientific calculation then. I warn you though... Math is not my strongsuit! Which is why I became an artist!

THAT'S EXACTLY WHY this hand thing when figured out will be good! hahahaha.... no more looking at your watch and trying to figure out when you got to pack in!

The hand thing is visual, and perfectly an artist's device!!!

Keep us informed...
I'm still waiting for my last day of memorial weekend to get some sun so I can get out. Every year, it traditionally rains on this weekend. So far, its not disappointing us with change. Ugh...

Well Larry, although it didn't exactly rain (we are having a drought here) it threatened to enough so that I lost my motivation to drag my stuff out to paint last night. The grand hand test will have to wait. Although your memorial day forcast did sorta hold up- even here in "sunny" Florida!
