Old Cinema
This one I am close to finishing. I am keeping it in sight, as it is "mood based" and I keep wondering if it needs anything more.
C&C Most welcome.
Image upload does not seem to be working, so I will try a link

Re: Old Cinema
I love this. It reminds me of the small town I grew up in. I don't look for people. For me it has that very early morning feel when most folks might not be up yet....there's probably one early morning guy around the corner walking his dog. It's Sunday morning and everyone else is sleeping in. That's my story and I'm sticking to it!!

Re: Old Cinema
I have a thing for old buildings. New ones just seem cold and impersonal. This picture has a feeling of nostalgia for the past. It could be in a small town like mine where the population is dwindling. The old theater we had here was torn down years ago and it was sad.

Re: Old Cinema
I keep looking for a marquee(sp). I don't believe I have ever seen one with a billboard on top. Maybe make it more readable? I do love the cast shadow's and early morning light... Azure

Re: Old Cinema
Thanks for your comments.
Concerning people, I was debating on putting in a person...
for example, here is a photoshop mock-up with someone walking away on the right.

Re: Old Cinema
Good light in this one and love the nostalgic feel...personaly I don't think the figure really adds anything to it...I liked the feeling of early morning with the sun just coming up...the person has changed that mood.

Re: Old Cinema
Not sure about the figure Peter - too dark and walking away takes the eye out of the painting.
I do like the subject and the solidity of the buildings.
The tree's a little bit solid, but that's easily remedied - it needs to be 3dimensional, so needs back to front depth adding.
The only bit that jarrs with me is the crossing - it's a little prominent I feel and the perspective is a touch out.
On the whole though, I do like this painting very much!

Re: Old Cinema
Yes, I agree, I wasn't really convinced on the figure. Scratch that.
As for the tree I will attend to that and perhaps the crossing, though I want to leave it in. Maybe attenuate it somewhat.

Re: Old Cinema
I like it. I think anything on the sidewalk would work. It looks too bare. A fire hydrant. Some pots of flowers against the wallby the open doorway. A bench or a chair. A person.

Re: Old Cinema
I keep coming back to look at your painting. I enjoy scene like you paint so much. I agree with the other's comments. I would like to see some variation in the colors of the sidewalk and street, as the light would hit some areas more strongly than in others. Not enough to compete but enough to add just a little visual interest. Just my thoughts

Re: Old Cinema
I like it alot too...I don't mind that there aren't any figures (often times Hopper left them out too)..the only comment is that I'd love to see your shadows all a bit darker...I think that would add more visual contrast....other than that..>GREAT job..I'm SCARED of buildings...I hope it's OK I adjusted the contrast in photoshop just to show you what I meant....

Re: Old Cinema
Thank you for all your comments and suggestions. It has given some things to think about. I think I'll sleep on it and see where that leaves me tomorrow.

Re: Old Cinema
Hi Peter - I love the painting- very well done. The only suggestion that I would make is to possibily change the value of the shadow on the sidewalk to that of the street ever so slightly to separate them just a bit more. Since the sidewalk is elevated in space I would lighten it. Just me and it looks great the way it is. Nice mood and it would wear well on a wall for a long time. Good job!
