Comp #123 - A Slice of Pie - VOTE HERE!
Work once again makes me late getting this up ...
This week's topic was:
A SLICE OF PIE
Here's the blurb you had to work with:
A Slice of Pie
I hope this will not be too challenging a subject - it should be something readily available to all and not terribly obscure, I hope. I will have to buy a pie since it is not worth the time and trouble for me to make one just for myself. *I do make great pies, tho - super flaky pastry!!!*
Am anticipating some great creative efforts here ... see how different angles and lighting/shadows can come into play here, try adding other props as "atmosphere", etc, etc.
Before placing your vote, consider the following criteria:
1. Is it on topic?
2. Technically excellent ... all the usual: in focus, DOF, well sharpened, composition, artistic merit ...
3. That WOW! factor
We have 4 entries this week:
1. A Tiny Slice of Pie
2. Mom's Apple Pie
3. Pizza Pie My Way
4. Yummm ... Lemmmon Mmmeringue
That's it, Folks! Thank you to all who took the challenge! Hopefully we'll get lots of critiques this week.
This will be a public vote.
Good luck, Everyone!!!
Cheers,
Sue

Re: Comp #123 - A Slice of Pie - VOTE HERE!
The out of focus tines and leading edge of the first one bothers me a little as does the out of focus or blured left hand side of the last one.
For me it has got to be 2 or 3.
I cannot understand why you did not get twenty entries for this! Who can resist pie, any kind of pie, all pie?

Re: Comp #123 - A Slice of Pie - VOTE HERE!
I hang in the pastel and plein air forums, but I saw "pie" and well, you know how hard it is to resist.
I voted for number two. I like the composition. And, the over all feel of it.
Number 3 is good, too, I like the crop. Number one looks good to eat and the last one is beautiful, but the meringue looks uncooked and I just can't handle runny egg white.
So to pick just one, #2 is it.
Later,
Jo

Re: Comp #123 - A Slice of Pie - VOTE HERE!
Should we vote by which kind of pie we like the best ... he he
I like #1 the best, the colors look real good. They took the time to make the tiny slice of pie look very attractive. I like the contrast of the berries with the vanilla ice cream and the cream colored plate. And the table cloth colors and style look perfect. This one also wins in creativity (in my opinion) what a great idea to have such a small piece with the fork, I like the play on sizes very much. It's also a very sharp in focus photo.
#2 I really like this photo too, but to me the focus on the pie looks a little soft, and I think I would have liked the napkin (if that's what it is) on the other side leading my eye in. Because this photos seems too heavy on the left side. But don't get me wrong this is really pretty, and I like the color of the back drop it looks really good.
#3 is the most boring of the group. I think if it was on a plate or something more interesting it would have been better (my opinion) and I really don't like the red background (sorry). But the lighting looks good in this photo and it looks sharp.
#4 My favorite kind of pie! So I agree with the title I really like the crop and composition, this is has a very sharp focus, and the lighting looks good. The color of the meringue looks a little more yellow then I remember it looking. And I don't think the background color does this nice subject justice, though it kind of matches the brown parts of the meringue, it really doesn't look good with the bottom part of the pie (my opinion again).
I think everyone has stepped it up this week, this photos are all really nice.

Re: Comp #123 - A Slice of Pie - VOTE HERE!
I sure like #2, (mom's apple pie). The addition of the apples makes for a nice still life and pleasing composition. The green leaves are lovely, pulling the shapes together and offering a rich color contrast. I like the background colors a lot. I find the knot in the pine a tad distracting, and just a slightly higher angle would have been nice to see. Otherwise, very nice.
All look great, and certainly good enough to eat. Great job everyone! Val

Re: Comp #123 - A Slice of Pie - VOTE HERE!
After studing numbers 2 and 3 I'm going with 2. Zoomed in on it and it is, I think by far the best of the 4. In the larger format it is stunning! Of course we all knew the size constrants we had to work with but still it is good, very good in larger size.

Re: Comp #123 - A Slice of Pie - VOTE HERE!
I agree with the comments about #2 and I also like #1. The pizza slice, though a good idea, doesn't look very good to me with the type of red color it is photographed on.
I love lemon meringue pie, but the bubbles on the front of the meringue bother me.

Re: Comp #123 - A Slice of Pie - VOTE HERE!
1) the berry pie should made bigger slice, but still looks good
2)the apples with the pie looks really nice together.
3) the pizza pie looks a little to busy, but still looks good
4) to much of the topping and not enough of the pie
good job every one ,now that you made me hungry.
it was a shame there was no chocolate pie.

Re: Comp #123 - A Slice of Pie - VOTE HERE!
1 - This would have been my choice if the pie wasn't so centered, and that just jumps out at me first. I like everything else about it.
2 - I like this one. Overall it's a pleasing photo with good color and composition. The knot in the wood adds to the composition. I think maybe I can guess whose this is!
3 - Good idea for pie! The red background is bright and over-powering. This could just be my monitor; I don't know.
4 - This one is pretty good too... a little less visual interest than 1 and 2. Looks tasty!
Good job everyone. I didn't have a pie this week to work with. It would have been fun... and tasty, to do this comp.

Re: Comp #123 - A Slice of Pie - VOTE HERE!
See Lucy now I thought the Fork helped the centered issue, and it's centered right and left, but it's not centered up and down.
I know that's your opinion, and I'm not arguing about it. Since this thread is all about our opinions and learning how people see things, I thought I would add how I see it. But I would be interested to know what other people think? Does this look centered to you? Even though it really isn't, does it look that way, and does it bother you?
BTW Lucy- I thought you did a good C&C
PS None of these are my photo...

Re: Comp #123 - A Slice of Pie - VOTE HERE!
That 2nd photo would have been good in the still life comp huh! I can see it as a painting.
Thanks for the input Retha

Re: Comp #123 - A Slice of Pie - VOTE HERE!
The fork does help, but when I first looked at it, the pie looked very centered to me. It was my immediate first impression, and that just stuck with me whenever I looked at it. However, in many ways, it's a really nicely arranged shot.
