Modern Arch

Here is the finished studio painting (the final one for my show in Sept. ) and the original plein air sketch.
I did not concern myself to much with the drawing in the sketch, since I had lots of reference from photos I shot. I concentrated on color and value, especially the nuances in the shadows.

Re: Modern Arch

Brad,

Awesomely realist painting! I like the cloud's reflections in the windows.

For a C&C I have two comments.
1) The perspective seems to be a little off. As the lines move towards the top of the painting, I maybe wrong, but I think they should converge and it looks like they are getting farther apart. It might be the camera angle.
2) On the right side of the arch thing, is a little ledge that sticks out. I can see from the left one what it should look like, but for some reason, you've carried the shadow all the way to the top of the painting. Again, I maybe wrong, but buildings are normally symetrical, and on the left, the little ledge sticks out from the wall, and the wall tapers back in on the right and is in shadow. That tells me that the ledge stops at the wall, and there isn't a little (trim for lack of a better word) that goes verticle. So, where is that shadow coming from on the right side? To me it looks like it should be on the little ledge, but not all the way up the wall.

I hope I've explained this well enough for you to understand what I'm talking about.

Don

Re: Modern Arch

Thanks Donald.
As for your two comments.
1) I think what you see there is a distortion from my jpeg. The perspective is better on the original painting.
2) If you look closer at the same part on the left, you can see that there is a part that juts out from the cut in the building at about 45 degrees and does go past the front surface of the building. It goes to the front edge of that bottom ledge from the arch
I did not make anything up, as you can see from my plein air study.

Re: Modern Arch

Brad,

Great! Glad to hear I was wrong, and it is just a camera angle problem. I know what that is like. No matter how hard I try, when I photograph my paintings, the camera is never parallel to the painting.

It's a beautiful painting, very realistic.

Re: Modern Arch

I remember this Plein Air. I remember looking at how you showed that interior well created by the architecture. I like your use of cool reflected light within that well in your new studio painting. This is very good painting in my opinion.
