Misty Mountain
I have been working on this all week off and on. It is from our RIL. The ref. had a castle on the top of the mountain. It was so small I left it off. I am not sure if I am done. C&C please. Jan

Re: Misty Mountain
Hi Jan, I feel like I am lost in this painting. There is nothing for the eye to rest on. The foreground shore colour is the same as under the mountains and that is a little disconcerting. There is no real sense of depth which I think you are trying to portray.

Re: Misty Mountain
thank you for your comments, Carol, I have felt lost in this painting all week. I know there is something there, I just have to find it. I will keep looking at it and see what I can do with it. Jan

Re: Misty Mountain
Jan, I like the sky and the water but I agree with Carol about the depth. If you lighten the value as you come forward, you will get more depth. Once you do that the eye will flow right in to your mountain.

Re: Misty Mountain
I like the distant veiw but the silhouette grass gets lost with nothing to silhouette against, perhaps brightening the mid and near beach areas?

Re: Misty Mountain
Jan, the clouds and the pinks above the mountains are beautiful. Nice work with the water. Don't give up on this one! I think you received some good advice about the shore.

Jan, I also think you did a good job on the clouds and the colours are really nice.

Re: Misty Mountain
Jan, some great advise on your painting has already been given, just a note that one thing that helps establish the paintings values, is doing a Greyscale copy, especially for landscapes. Then you can see visually what part needs some work. Hope that helps.

Re: Misty Mountain
Jan, I really love the softness of this painting, and you've done an excellent job on it. VERY nice composition too, btw. OK, if it were mine, this is what I would do: Add some stronger darks to the midground mountain shadows, a few bright white sparkles to the water, and some white splashes along the shoreline to the (our) left.
Looking forward to seeing where you take this!
Elizabeth

Re: Misty Mountain
I have done a little more work on this, I think I will change the name of the painting to "Pain in the Neck". I work and work and still don't like it. I like the picture I just don't like what I am doing to it. C&C please. Jan

Re: Misty Mountain
Hi Jan! I think the changes have really enhanced your painting. It reads very well to me, and it's excellently painted. The sky is spectacular, the water reflects both sky and clouds, the grass in the fore is perfect...the mountains fade toward the clouds and to the distance. You've got some nice strong shadows and contrasts...lovely, all around. I would try and offer a suggestion, but I really love it just as you have it here. Maybe after putting it aside a while, you'll see how wonderful it really is.
Elizabeth
You know what....you might try a frame. Maybe that's the finishing touch you're looking for.
