Convenience Greens, etc.

In putting together a new palette. I mix most greens, but I want a few pure pigment greens on the palette.

I'm going with a nice dull olive green, and with a quin green-gold. Two more green slots. Options I am considering:

- Winsor Green Blue Shade & Red Shade - Pure pigments, very different greens; both powerful, but I know I can use them gently; neither would be used in anything except a mix.

- Viridian - useful mid-green, but weaker and less useful for mixing really dark almost-blacks than the Winsors

- Permanent Sap Green - odd mix of pigments, too tempting to use without mixing (it looks nearly non-artificial)

Not in my mix: Hooker (basically, it's a variant on the pigments used for the superior Win Greens); Emerald (way too weird, not such a good mixer).

Your thoughts?

Give Underseas Green by Daniel Smith a try. I just found it and love it so far. I use Permenet Sap Green as a base never straight. I'll add yellows, red, and blues as need for various greens

Re: Convenience Greens, etc.

I never used greens in my pallette after using Sap Green as a beginner. I always mixed my own greens. However I now have Hooker's Green Deep in my palette which I modify and use as an extra green. I also have Viridian which I use with Dioxane Purlple to make dense blacks after seeing Shelley's demo at Sutton.

Two greens that I use straight from the tube because they are so natural looking are

Undersea Green by Daniel Smith (like Mike, it is on my palette all the time)

Shadow Green by Holbein (a very, very dark green)

Hookers Green is the only green on my palette. (I once used sap but I like Hookers better.) But I never use it straight from the tube! Usually I mix it with raw sienna, burnt sienna, or lemon yellow and on rare ocasions ultramarine. Too may greens spoil the broth.

Re: Convenience Greens, etc.

I have hookers green in my palette. I mix it with all kinds of yellow/ sienna/ochre/gold for some awesome greens.

If you want a really nice convenience green, try Art Spectrum's Australian Green Gold.

Viridian = Hookers Green + Ultra Blue

Under sea Green = Ultra Blue + Quin Gold

Hookers Green = Raw Sienna + Ultra Marine + viridian

A GREAT Green Recipe Thread! Click HERE

JJ,
Undersea Green by Daniel Smith is a mixture of Ultramarine Blue and Quinacridone Deep Gold (on the label), so it could be mixed; however, Learning to Paint asked for "convenience" greens (I took that to mean tube greens that wouldn't have to be mixed). Also, when I use my UG from the tube, it is always the same shade and tone which is not always true with greens you mix yourself. Depending on the ratios of blues and golds in your mixture, it can vary quite a bit. So, as long as DS is making it, I'll be buying my Undersea Green from them and not bothering to mix it.

I keep 3 convenience greens on my pallette... Hookers, Sap and Undersea...

I mix both the hookers and sap with other pigments for variation. I use the Undersea from the tube as it's quite natural looking.

I also bought a tube of veridian to mix with diox purple to make black.
