Wonder
I posted this in the open critic forum but wanted to share it here in my home forum.
It's charcoal on watercolor paper. 4x5"
I'm trying to gain confidence in doing faces. Since i love macro closeup images, i thought I'd try one of a face.
Does it work?
Is the hair wisps distracting?
Need any improvements?

This is wonderul! I think the wisps of hair are great, they make the whole picture fascinating. The only improvement I could suggest would be to add at least a small highlight to the eye. Eyes are wet, they reflect light in almost all situations, even if only a little. Having it so dark makes it look flat. The eyelashes are awesome, though. This is a great drawing!

Awesome! This is so good. You did a wonderful job on the shading. And those eyelashes are terrific. Also, the little wisps of hair add just the right touch of softness and helps to break up the large areas of light.
Very good!!! I hope you do more like this.

thanks rick r, DraigAthar, gulliot, renfish, elankat, shehaub for looking and your comments.
My ref photo didn't have any highlights on the eye and I struggled whether to put one or not, so went the chicken's way out ((((cluck-cluck)))) but it's too late now.... i've put this little girlie in the mail to someone in canada who is participating in the postcard 3 project.
I think I shall try again. maybe use a family member to desecrate next time
(and elankat---- my goal is to be able to render people as well as you do, so thanks for looking )

Ack! *blushes deeply*
I would hope that you would want to render better than me because I think I'm marginal at best. But thank you for the totally undeserved compliment. I think you just made my year!

orchidlover,
You ask "does it work". Well my friend, not
only it works, it works extreamly well. WOW!
I understand your paper is only 4x5. Your
precision and attention to detail is fantastic!
I can't get over how beautiful this piece is...
Very well done. Manooch

thank you Manooch for your wonderful comments.
Actually I errored on the size, it is 4x6 (i made a mistake and looked at the image size in my adobephotoshop program)
I have been doing a lot of things in this size format for the postcard 3 art project i'm involved in at the moment.

Orchidlover: I really really love this!!! No, the wisps are needed. OK, a little comment-you may want to lift out a tiny bit from the eye just to separate the iris from the black center of the eye, but very very subtly.
This reminds me of a large airbrush piece I am in the process of doing of my daughter. There is pieces of hair crossing her face. I was always told that this is distracting-I myself find it interesting!
Very wonderful drawing! I love faces up close too!

jocelynsart - ohhhh alas it's too late to do any lifting. this little girlie is winging it's way to canada somewhere to reside in a postcard 3 abode.
however, i'm very tempted to try her again. though i usually have beginner's luck when ever i attempt something new and the pressure of acheiving this again maybe more than i can handle. saying that .... if i don't do this particular one again, i shall attempt another closeup. i love macro work.
