Use to denote nudity/mature subject matter Starbucks and Diner sketching

I haven't posted anything here in a long time, but here are some recent sketches done at Starbucks and the local diner. I might get to a life drawing class next week, and for sure this fall I'll be knee deep in it in school. There's more drawings on my blog. these are all at original size, done in 2B pencil. I've been super busy with work and the magazine, plus I have to do a bunch of new work for a show I have in Sept on monsters, which will be fun. I've also been painting, which you can see on the blog as well.

best all, MM

a very fast tone study

OT: Good work on the monkey . . need to reshoot it outside though, or use different lighting. GE makes a "natural light" bulb.

Great Drawings!!! Thanks for sharing!!! Did your models know that you were drawing them? If yes, what were their reactions? I wanted to do some of these also in local shops but I am not sure if people would like it or not. Thanks!

Great shots Mike...you'll give Skipstah a run for his money! The first and third are my faves...But I see the strength of your style in the second one....makes me want to draw all the time seeing sketches like yours...

Good to see these Mike its the hardest situation I think to draw people I like #3 the best but the shadow one is intriguing in its own way. Nice ellipse on the table believable perspective in #1

Chap in the checkered shirt is terrific, absorbed in his book. I’d also be interested in hearing about peoples reaction to you sketching.

Re: Starbucks and Diner sketching

Thanks all. I got plenty of exercise drawing elipses in perspective Bill, working in comics and especially animation where I was drawing background designs on shows like Batman.

Huanghehe, Some folks notice, some folks don't. But you have to just be fearless and draw, if somebody objects they usually turn away or hide their face, but I'm good at picking my victims from the right angles and distance. teenage girls seem to be the most sensative and vien at the same time about being sketched :-) I say grab a sketchbook and just draw them peoples!

Thanks Tracey, your work has the same effect :-)

Richard, yes, I need to have a good camera set up, I will in the new studio.

Re: Starbucks and Diner sketching

This is a great way to get subjects for those who buy their coffee out, and I guess after a while you'd be quite used to it and the nerves would go!
Some great observations Mike... and the blog has lots of cool and interesting stuff... I like the plein air-studio finished one too!

Mac

Re: Starbucks and Diner sketching

Thanks Mac, I feel a bit of a momentum building with all the drawing and painting going on. Hey Starbucks makes tea also :-)

i think you coukd even do this in a pub or bar if the light was ok. I think I need a new pair of glasses though, the far away isn't as sharp now. Too many years drawing up close I guess. Most of my other cartoonuist pals now wear bi-focals.
