Re: Comp #118-Unlikely Subjects-Voting
You folks just keep getting better and better. The quality of entries just keeps going up. For this comp it looks to me like personal taste is what is going to win in this one. The following are just my views on things, you most likely will not see the way I do.
1. Direction Post – Other than maybe being slightly tilted to the right, I see nothing wrong here. The post gets one's attention and the valley pulls you on into the photo.
2. Feather Duster Fantasy – This is one of my three contenders. It is so “on topic” and well done how could it not be. The finely feathered edges of the feathers really grab hold (I guess that is the way they were designed, huh) of dust and the viewer.
3. Hubcaps in Barrow – Eye catching because of the lighting, well staged!
4. Thread Keeper – The second of my contenders. The light playing on the thread’s many colors really gets one’s attention!
5. Sleeping Teenager – That is for a fact something one doesn’t get to do often, photograph a sleeping teen. The face should have had more of the light but it is still a rare sight.
6. SMASH – This is the last of my contenders. Simple, outstandingly well done and composed, just enough of the reflected red to keep one looking, very sharp! (Pun intended)
7. Ring Toss – This is ok but I think just the skull might have had more impact. Did you try it without the ring?
8. Fossil – The platform the rock is on is in focus, to my eyes the rock and fossil are not. Would not mind adding that rock to my collection though.
9. Paint Drying – Good idea but I think you might have gone too far. Did you try it with just a dab falling out of the tube?
10. Pealing Paint – Even though you are on the thirds, this still seems too centered to have a strong impact for me. Try pulling out a little and placing the “V” on one of the lower “hot spots”, maybe that will work better.
11. Decked Out Cow Skull – Like the sepia on this. Good point of view but it looks to me like the point of the nose is a little out of focus. The lighting you have used gives a strong feeling of heat. Should you do a desert theme, include this.
Well there is my free advise, just remember you get what you pay for.

Re: Comp #118-Unlikely Subjects-Voting
I like most of these shots, but many seem off-topic to me. Am I just not getting the idea? I was expecting to find well-captured photos of broken household lamps and pencil sharpeners and dusty fans and piles of mail and ugly bug-infested vegetables in the garden (and feather dusters), and things that you wouldn't normally want to photograph. Many of these photos are just too interesting to be unlikely subjects.

LOL..I know what you mean!
Once an object is photographed and given some "wow", it's no longer "unlikely"!

Re: Comp #118-Unlikely Subjects-Voting
by the way... i am NOT implying that i don't like the feather duster photo. it is very well shot. but i think it is on topic because i would not normally pull out my feather duster to photograph it, which is the whole idea here. actually i voted for it.

Re: Comp #118-Unlikely Subjects-Voting
The term "unlikely: is very subjective .... and will mean something different to everyone. I suppose Unlikely is not the same as unlikable and we are such a diverse group and take shots of such diverse things that just about anything we shoot could be someone else's usual subject lol. Then we give it "wow" status and wonder why "we" did not think to shoot it

Re: Comp #118-Unlikely Subjects-Voting
Each of these things the photographer could see every day, in the case of SMASH maybe not but the normal reaction there would be clean it up not shot it. Any way the fact that they are seen everyday makes them unlikely.
When thinking on this topic I know I started looking at everyday things with renewed interest, it would be my guess all of did.

Re: Comp #118-Unlikely Subjects-Voting
I found this topic to be very challenging.
I did 4 different shoots of 4 different "unlikey" subjects.
Some things cannot be wowed....back to the tripod!
The shooting was easy--the concept is what I found the most challenging.
Some everyday objects can be photographed and then end up looking like a product advertisment; which I found "too likely".
This really was not one of the easier object specific topics and I really enjoyed the assignment very much.
Thank Wendy!

Re: Comp #118-Unlikely Subjects-Voting
I'm stuck on three of them this week (a very good week!)
Feather Duster, Thread keeper and SMASH. All equally appealing in different ways and a tough call.

yes, i was doing that too, even though i can't use my camera. i lent it off to my brother-in-law until my arm heals. it was fun to look 'round the house and yard for unlikely subjects.
