Use to denote nudity/mature subject matter Twelve Monthly Challenges July 2007 Birds

Hi Everyone, welcome to July!

This month we will study birds in art. We kind of started out talking about peacocks then we added a falcon and now we have added all birds. So the choice is yours. Please only submit work that is completed for this learning challenge. If you use a reference, please tell us what, and tell us your medium.

If you have already created bird art and would like to show us your art please post it here.

Anyone working on this challenge can double post their work here and their finished piece also in the Art Gallery.

Anything representational is accepted in this forum. For those that maybe are just starting out this means that you can tell it’s a bird rather than having to be told it’s a bird like in abstract art. We do still focus a lot on masters of the past. They have a lot to teach us if we will only look. If you want to do your own thing and not a study of a master, please do. No problem at all with doing your own thing and it is encouraged.

If you don’t have a bird to do from life or your own photo please use the wc library references. They are great. Let the photographer know you are using their picture as a courtesy to them. Just pm them.

And you can always use imagination to create a bird but try to make it as representational as possible. That is the skill of using imagination in a classical traditional way.

Seems as if birds are not as highly depicted in art as I thought. Looking through hundreds of paintings this afternoon for our inspiration and guidance for our July project, it was evident that birds are one, not considered, in saying this, I do find that hypostasis highly doubtful. Two, they are absent because adding them to landscape paintings are difficult to master in a composition. And last, when you do see birds, it is often as a portrait style of a bird and very seldom as the main subject in a more evolved fine art piece.

I am going to try and post some pictures, my computer is acting like a girl and shuting down when she feels like it. so if I disappear, I'll be back when she (my computer) is not acting sick or like she has a virus or worm. Silly girl.

Also, just ask if I miss something or am not clear. No problem. We help each other here. Nickel

Re: Twelve Monthly Challenges July 2007 Birds

Sorry I forgot to put down what the challenge was with birds,
Try to make your bird soft to the touch. What I mean is yes, most of
us work on a two-dimensional plane, paper or canvas so when I look
at a work on line, it is even more difficult to experience the feeling.
Try to show that your bird is alive and soft to the touch. Or if you
happen to draw, paint a dead bird, show the weight of a dead bird.
A dead bird feather's still feel soft. I know that because of my little bird
who dosn't tell me good morning anymore.
Oh well, one more thing,
have fun with your bird
art too.

Hi Nickel & Tyree and all you classical friends here,

Hope your computers get up and go right for you both.
Nickel - sorry your bird friend died. I like birds but every time I dared keep one it got a cold and died. And YES, I think I will do that Durer you posted in graphite pencils.

Susan, let me see the owl you find, I'd like to do one too. I have been doing some sketching in scavenger hunts and it has made me want to work on something longer than 20 minutes.

Re: Twelve Monthly Challenges July 2007 Birds

Goodmorning, cool that you will consider the Durer Azulparsnip. I really enjoyed the last one you did.Yes I was sorry about the bird, it was my little friend. I hope to see some owls in this challenge too. Hi ya Susan, About owls, there is one in my neighboorhood, I hear it but have only seen one once here, during an ice storm, looking for food I guess, it was really cold. I checked the scavenger hunt, those look like fun. I'm wanting to do a really large piece like as big as the side of a house lol, what is wrong with me???lol!I guess when you go that big they are called a mural or something. Mony I hope you like the one I found with the nudes since you've been drawing them.

Re: Twelve Monthly Challenges July 2007 Birds

Nickel - go for it!!!!!! that is awesome - how about the side of your garage?? (I'm an old hippie)
For a while we had a landscape I did on one wall of the livingroom. I am a believer in making art part of your life.
I painted on the hood of our old car. It bit the dust this spring. I reall don't want to paint on our new one.......yet
Have you figured out I'm an old hippie??????

Re: Twelve Monthly Challenges July 2007 Birds

Azulparsnip, I doubt your old lol, I did resist the urge to paint the house yesterday, that would really seem like tooooo much work. The Garage could be in danger. Yesterday to change subjects in mid stream, three woodpeckers pecking on the ground under a cherry tree in my backyard, triping trying to get to my old trusty camera and take a picture through the window, my camera didn't catch em, just an odd shape of wall & window.

Hey Susan, how do your kitty and bird get along? My big dog rode our bird once around the house in her mouth. The dog liked it but I don't think the bird wanted to go for a second ride. That's cute, "Look at me," sweet!

Re: Twelve Monthly Challenges July 2007 Birds

Hi ladies ! ... I'm sorry to know about your sweet little birdie Nickel! I love birds , ever since I was a little girl... I used to be a real birdwatcher then but I have never owned one 'cause I've always owned a lot of cats !
I found a baby swift once , and grew it up until it was big enough to fly away ... it was such a challenging thing to do but such great company!
I have a lot of past work on birds ... I don't know I will consider the nudes one as I 'd like something with the bird at the centre of the composition , I'll see ! I like the falcon very much , but I could consider a peacock too !

I love the story about the doggie ride !

Take care my dear classical friends !
