Vincent van Gogh

I've always been a fan of van Gogh, so when I went looking for a subject for a bust I thought of him. He has many different self-portraits so I took a bit from each and did it as I thought he might look in his younger years. Yes, mine still has both ears.
This one I did in clay them molded it myself and did the sculpture in hydrocal. Also applied my own patina.

Hi Al,

if I remember rightly, wasn't this your first sculpture - done last year? I think it's the mark of a good artist that can successfully work with different media - e.g. watercolour and clay.

Lovely work!

Al22,

Great job - that's a very professional looking piece. Is this your first attempt at sculpture? You've created a very realistic portrait of a beloved artist - I'm sure he would be proud. You obviously have a great eye for expression in portraits. Thanks for posting!

I really just started sculpting in the last couple of years but I enjoy 3-d work. Was a bit hard getting used to having to look at the backside of my art.........lol

Thumbs up

Hi al:
Wonderful sculpture I remember seeing it on your web site and liked it then too. I also remember your 'Lady With A Water Jar' I think she is my favorite (very graceful lines). Are you working on anything now and if so we love progress images too.
I visited the foundry link you provided and enjoyed my stay very informative. I'll be in Mesa next month and I'll try and make arrangements for a tour.
Best,
Kathy

Hi al:
I saw on the TV this morning it was going to be over 100+ degree's in Phoenix today. It gets very warm in the summer where I live in northern California. We're considered valley and thus get the valley temps 80-100+ in the summer.
Love the hot weather!
Best,
Kathy

Welcome neighbor to the WC sculpture forum. Very well done work and great looking patina. Did you just 'dive' into mold making or did you take a workshop first. Just curious, I took one by Jerry Cox up in your area a couple of years ago. Learned a lot, mostly to let someone else do it, but did forget the pain somewhat and did the first one this weekend since the workshop.
Doing a portrait of such a well known face would be daunting with the model sitting for ya. Doing it from composite pics is bravery under fire.

Max, thanks for the comments. I know exactly what you mean. I just dove in and started molding......after about 3 pieces, I figured out it's easier and maybe even cheaper (by the time you buy all the supplies you need) to let the foundry do it. They have the right tools and can do it in a quarter the time.......
This is especially true if the piece is a complicated one;i.e. voids, etc.......
