Two from Topsail
What a crazy day I had yesterday! I left Raleigh early and met Mike Rooney on Topsail Island. We spent the whole day painting. I got back to Raleigh late last night; Throughly exhausted, but very happy.

Very nice Wyn. I'm mostly a lurker in the plein air forum but like what I see. How wonderful to take off to the coast for a day of painting!

Hi Ronda, I'm glad you came out of the shadows
Thanks for the comments.
I'm a full-time painter now. I retired from IBM about one year ago. It's hard to believe it's been a year... It is still a stretch to go to the beach and back to Raleigh in one day. I'll plan on staying overnight next time.

I really like the boat Wyn. If you don't mind my asking, are you retired from IBM? or did you make a major life choice and just quit and dedicate your life to art? Either way, you're living my dream.. Good luck!

Hi Don, Thanks. I retired from IBM after 33 years. I could have hung-on for a few more years, but I fell in love with plein air painting. I am dedicated to being the best I can be with the time I have left. I know there are many people that would love to do this. Be careful what you wish for, you just might get it. I don't have to sell paintings to eat. I do it because it is what I want to do. It is much harder to make a living from art sales. I'm very lucky.

It's good to see your taking your values down a couple of degrees. always allows us to play a little more and see what happens a couple values lower!
very commendable!

Hi Tom, It wasn't done on purpose (the value thing). I think it had more to do with the light at the beach than anything else, but I'm glad you like it.

Re: Two from Topsail
Isn't it great to have the opportunity to experiment with different light? Glad that you got the chance. Certainly worth the effort to go there. Great days work.

Re: Two from Topsail
Wyn,
Colors on the first are really true. I like the yellow in the car. It lends a tonal completeness to the painting. I don't think all lines must be perfect, but I think you should be consistent in what you allow (does that make sense?) The 2nd and third column over from the left on the porch bend different directions. Neither is more degrees off than the other, but next to each other they draw way too much attention to themselves.
The boat is super! The lines are lovely, and the setting is just right. Boats suit you! The warm trees in the distance are so good, they fit in without calling any attention to themselves. I think that's perfect.

Thanks Robin. I was talking about how bright it was with Mike. Our eyes where saturated after the first one. We took a break, ate some lunch, and went back out. I think you really need to paint from a shady area in such a bright location.

Thanks Brian. I think that is what Bill Wray was saying when he said I need to work on my drawing. I really need to watch those lines that need to be straight. Thanks for the heads-up.
I think one key point about boats is that once you get them drawn right, you can just have a ball pouring on as much paint and detail as you want. They can have some very strange lines and shapes.
