Kumihimo

I have been doing some Kumihimo braids and mixing that with my lampwork beads. Wanted to show a couple pictures here:

I'm sure having fun doing the Kumihimo! Any other photos??

Re: Kumihimo

Nancy, I learned Kumihimo 2 weeks ago, and I think I've made 8 already, just nothing hanging off of them yet 'cause I've got houseguests and can't make beads. I'll try to show later.

I really like the brown one you made. It's beautiful!

Re: Kumihimo

nice job, nancy! i'm particularly fond of the earth-toned piece. lizajayne, can't wait to see your braids!

i've got lots more kumi braids done - well, not done done, they still need to be clasped. but i'll be bringing them to the B&B show. some will be for sale with my leaves on them, others will be for sale by themselves. i've been trying to do some of them in colors to match our poppy kits. at this show, we're doing lots of muted pastel kits. i'll post pix of most of my "in progress" braids and braids with stuff to be attached over in the S&T. i've got another braid on the marudai and 2 more waiting for the marudai. and i leave for milwaukee when? tuesday morning? aaaarrrrghhhh!

Well, I learned them while on the bead retreat to Michigan. It was the perfect thing to work on at the airport. I got stuck in Chicago OHare on a long layover, made 2 there from the same thread (so no scissors needed).

And the past 2 weeks since I've been back I've had house guests so I haven't been able to make beads. Kumihimo is perfect for sitting on the couch watching tv.

Maybe I'll get them photographed tomorrow.

Re: Kumihimo

Well, now that company is gone, I got mine photographed, and I finished a necklace today. I learned Kumihimo at the bead retreat (thanks Rona!). We used EK Success Adornaments Fibers. They are pre-carded, color coordinated groups of fibers. It makes it pretty easy to not have to think about that part. I bought more after I got home from the retreat (http://www.crafterstoybox.com/store/adorn.html) and have added to those with some yarns of my own.

These are what I've done so far, including the necklace that I also posted in the S&T.

Re: Kumihimo

Hey Sandra! lovely kumihimo and beads!
Nancy, thanks for the link to the fibers. I'll check that one out too. I really like the choker.
Gladys, it took me all of 10 minutes to learn it. The longest part about it is just choosing, cutting, and winding your fibers onto bobbins. After that it's cake!

I wanted to ask, how does everyone finish their ends? I've been using bead cones, using a heavy gauge wire through the knot and pulling it into the cone. I see that Nancy left the bracelet natural. Just curious what other options were out there.

Re: Kumihimo

I have been leaving most unfinished - just tying knots (and a little super glue to hold them). Then I don't have to charge as much and they are easy to finish. People can tie them tight or loose.

Bead cones looks very professional if you want that more finished look I think.

Re: Kumihimo

WOW! Those are beautiful. Do you think it would be possible to learn kumihimo from a book? If so, do you have any recommended books? Thanks!
