Best places for Artists to Live?

I was in Asheville, NC last week and was overwhelmed by all the art and artists there. It's also beautiful and affordable. I hear Hot Springs, Arkansas is a haven for artists, too. It got me wondering about where the best places are for artists to live and make a living. Any experiences or suggestions?

Santa Fe, New Mexico is jumpin'. I've heard a lot of good things about San Francisco...

I could not agree with you more about Asheville, NC. I love it there and would move there in a heartbeat if I could. Charlotte has a rather large artist community as well.

Re: Best places for Artists to Live?

I'm in the Comox Valley on Vancouver Island and I heard it is only 2nd (Canada) in number of artists per capita to Saltspring Island. Also on the West Coast here in Canada.

Hopin' though? I don't know...I'm sitting in a gallery right now doing my volunteer shift and so far in the past 5 hours only 5 people have come in. A motorhome almost did too, but that's another story.

I am in the Okanagan Valley, in British Columbia, and there are a lot of artists here as well. I sit in our local gallery as well...no motorhomes coming in though.

Everything good you have ever heard about San Francisco is true, and then some.

The only problem with San Francisco is that it is one of the two most expensive cities in the U.S. in terms of housing. Otherwise I would be living there myself.

Re: Best places for Artists to Live?

San Francisco is a beautiful place as are many cities along the California coast, like Santa Barbara and Laguna Beach, where I'm from. California is very expensive on the whole, though, with SF and SB being among the most expensive places in the world to live. Maybe it's worth it but I moved to try something else. Californians tend to think there is no where else to live but I'm finding that that is just not true.

I am in Port Townsend Washington, lots of artists here and a very creative, supportive town government, but getting expensive now that we are being written up in Sunset, travel mags, and the like. Rich rich rich people moving here from Seattle, California, etc., but they are bringing their money with them and the town is more prosperous, thus more people are buying art.

Re: Best places for Artists to Live?

Oh, there are lots of good places for artists to live.

Only trouble is, most all of them cost a small fortune to live in.

And if they don't yet, you can bet they will soon.

Re: Best places for Artists to Live?

Hi,

After doing an exaustive research and some equations I've come to conclusion that the best place for us to live would be at your place.
We'd be painting while you would serve us some snacks....

Kind regards,

José :-)

Oh, hello fellow WA artist! I live in WA too, but just east of Seattle.

As a wildlife artist probably the best places for me to live would be Montana or Wyoming. Lots of wildlife and western art galleries and communities there as well as gorgeous scenery and wildlife viewing opportunities.
But ... my day job keeps me here.

Re: Best places for Artists to Live?

I have read or heard on several occasions that artists serious about marketing their wares should live on a seacoast - any seacoast. The thinking being that inland sites are less likely to provide the best marketing.

I think Santa Fe is now considered one of three "best marketing" sites in the USA, and it sure isn't anywhere near water. But what it is now, is exhorbitantly expensive to live in. I know several artists who lived there for years who have been forced out by the escalating costs. Same goes for the other prime marketing cities of NY City, San Francisco, Houston, Miami, etc.
