Tropical breezeway mural -wip?

Hi Everyone,

I'll be starting a new mural next week. It's been a while. My schedule is so tight at home that the most difficult part of the "biz" for me is finding the time to go to a client's house to paint. I'm trying to organize it so that I can work as efficiently as possible. My plan is to do a full scale drawing at home and than transfer it to the wall when I get to the client's house. This should cut down my on site work by one day.

I showed the homeowners three sketches at three different price ranges and they chose the middle range.

This is what I'll be doing. This is just a rough sketch. I will correct the perspective on the full scale drawing. The railing to the right represents the real railing at the top of the stairs. The idea is to give the effect that the upstairs hallway is an open corridor or breezeway with arches that looks out to the tropical treetops.

I will try to do a work in progress.
Thank you for looking! Comments welcome

Oh these look fantastic ! cant wait - I think i like the first one best, looks like little "juliette" balconies ! Will the mural be viewed from that far back or would the wall be closer when most people are viewing it ? (wondering about looking "UP " to see the underside of the balcony ) ??( IF that makes sense)

Re: Tropical breezeway mural -wip?

Wendi, Tina, Michele & Sue-Thank you so much for commenting and taking an interest. The votes have been counted. I will definitely try to take some pictures as I go along.

Bower & dreams-This is the far wall of the livingroom. When you walk into the house the stairs are right there and the livingroom is off to the left(easily viewed right from the front door). The doorway that is next to the stairs leads to the kitchen. I will go back on Monday to stand in the space and determine from which vantage point the mural will be drawn . I think I might do it from the perspective of standing across the room in the center(much like the perspective of the last sketch). In that case I think the ceiling line which continues from the real hallway will be sightly visible(does that make sense?)

The actual painting will begin on Thursday. I'll keep everyone posted!

Thanks again,
Cindy

Here's a picture of the space. The measurements are 14' wide by 9' high(from paint line to ceiling)

Re: Tropical breezeway mural -wip?

HI Everyone,

Well yeseterday was my first day painting. I have never painted on a 12ft scaffolding before so for the first two hours I was just trying to get used to it. After I got my scaffolding legs I got in the groove.

BUT as you can see from the picture I have some major fixing to do with the rear arches. I knew when I left yesterday that something wasn't right but it wasn't until I looked at it in pictures that I realized the rear arches were too thin and a little lopsided. I had drawn it on paper first and transfer but I guess I didn't catch it there either. Now instead of moving on to the foliage and rail tomorrow I have to rework this area first. Also I don't know if I should drop the ceiling down more so you can see more of it.(that would make it look like you are standing closer to that wall-as it is now it is from the perspective of standing at the farthest distance straight across from it) I didn't want to do that because it would take away from the outdoor scene. But I'm afraid it looks too squashed. I'm also hoping that when I put the railings and folliage in it will help make more sense.

I would be so grateful if someone could give me some suggestions on how to fix this. HELP PLEASE!! Thank you

Re: Tropical breezeway mural -wip?

Maybe if I drop the ceiling down to show more and add more wall between the ceiling and the top of the arch.??? Would I than need to show more of the wall that peek out from the side?

Re: Tropical breezeway mural -wip?

Its kind of difficult to see anything, so....

The main thing I see is the bottom portion of the arch isn't symetrical..

this is very roughly done

if your trying to mimic the extisting opening, it may be better to drop them further down (allowing more ceiling) and make them slightly smaller..

We all suffer from anxiety over our work and weither its a mural or a canvas we goi through ugly stage after ugly stage until we finally get to a pont where we can say "HEY that works!" Fortunately others seldom see what we perceive as ugly.
