Plein Air at Hilton Head, SC
Last week I took a workshop with Susan Sarback at Hilton Head Island on the South Carolina coast. Here's some of my paintings.
I took the photos outside so hopefully they look better.

This was the first afternoon...I chose a wildflower field instead of the lagoons!
Second day! I did the lagoon!
While everyone else painted flowers and water, another artist and I chose this mermaid statue. I finished all of her except for the hands area...so if that looks a bit odd, you know why...lol!
We painted two scenes of the marshes...this was my first.
and below is the last painting I finished...another of the marsh.
I did improve with using the palette knife during the week! and no medium with the oils!! I really like that.

Hi Carly,
Looks like you had a blast. Very nice! I like them.
The only time I ever tried this, we mixed values ahead of time. Did you do that?

Hello and thanks.
No paints were mixed ahead of time. We began with warm color in the light and cool color in the shade....then all the mixing was done on the canvas...not on the palette!

these are wonderful! so lavish. the marshes are my favorite. even with thick paint, your sense of values help push back the distance.
they remind me of scott burdick too.
i hope you dont mind me asking , but i'm new to oils (was a watercolorist), are you applying paint right from the tube?
(edit dang my speed reading... i just read the palette knife tidbit!)

Thanks for sharing these delightful paintings. My favorite is the Lagoon. A very successful painting indeed.

Carly, The "Lagoon" is a winner. Very Monet.
The statue looks like Sarback style. Hensche like.
How is she as a teacher?

Lovely use of blue .. my vote is for the lagoon as well .. like the first marsh scene as well .. great stuff .. I mix color on canvas but have never tried mixing all colors on a canvas .. looks like a blast .
Curious .. were you limited to certain colors or was freedom left to your choice?
.. bad choice of wording .. I like the first marsh next best . they are all wondeful and I think the statue has the best expression of the blues but I'm a landscape type of guy.

Carly, this work is just excellent! Really beautiful. What pigments were you using?

I don't have a lot to compare! but I'd say that Susan is the best! Everything she said was from a teaching standpoint....I only wish I could have taped it all..lol! She simplifies and keeps you interested all the time.
Paints were used alla prima from the tube...sometimes adding white. Especially with the misty mornings. There was no limitation on colors for the palette...Susan does recommend a palette but I already had all but three of the ones she recommended. We used no earth colors like burnt sienna, burnt umber, sap green! Absolutely no black. (I also used the water soluble oils - noone else did that...and everyone was surprised that they could tell no difference)
However...the fact that all the paint washed out of my jeans when I got home was nice!
The mermaid is one of my favorites...it looks so much better in person..much richer in color. I found that taking the photos was difficult...the paint gives off a lot of shine even in a shadowed area where I took the photos.
Thanks everyone...it's great to get so much encouragement from all of you.

Beautiful Carly. Your strokes intrigue me. I'd love to watch you as you paint. The Logoon is wonderful but I think I like the first Marsh the best...your water is more reflective and the brush in the distance reminds me of places I've been that I would love to return to.
Excellent work.

Carly, you inspire me to drag out my old regular oils, and my water miscible oils. Haven't done a palette knife painting in years.
I'm sure it was a great workshop.

I WAS AT THE SARBACK WK-SHOP WITH CARLY!
Last week I went with Carly to Hilton Head to paint with Sarback and learn about color and light! Great workshop and Carly is a hoot! We had an enjoyable week on the island! She had me laughing with the funny stories she told. She shared her "YUPO" skills with me after class.
First I'll try to upload a "SARBACK" original that Susan did as a demo,so you can see what we were aimin' for.
