Outdoors for the first time ....
I ventured outdoors to paint for the very first time this morning.
Granted, I didn't venture very far......I only made it as far as the back porch.
Oh well, it's a start, right?
I'm also still learning how to paint in oils, so don't expect too much.
It isn't done yet (obviously), so I'll have to finish it up on another day.

Re: Outdoors for the first time ....
great job
I love the ligthing and the shadows of the plants.
How did you like painting on location?
did you find that it was easier to see the colors live and in person than from a photo?
keep it up

Re: Outdoors for the first time ....
Thanks Paul.
I do prefer painting from life, rather than from a photo.
It's a much richer, and more rewarding experience.
I think that I'm going to go back to acrylics, though.
Acrylics just seem better suited to the way I paint.
I'm not sure how they'll work outdoors, but I'm going to give it a try.
If anyone has any advice for a budding plein-air acrylic painter, I'd really like to hear it.
Thanks again.

Hi steven;
Hugh Greer has a great book on landscape painting.
Also try this link out of another Acrylic plein air painter it is a great demo of how he goes about painting outdoors.

Looks pretty good to me, especially for a first time outdoor painting and one
"learning how to paint in oils". Really like the shadow pattern on the wall, my
eye was attracted to that right away.

Nearby is always a great location for your first away-from-the-studio work. Nice lighting and interesting subject. Hope to see another post, soon!

Thanks for the link, Doug.
Just what I was hoping for.
These are great videos, with lots of good information.
I'll have to give this a try.
Thanks again.

Hi Steve,
Acrylics work just fine outside but acrylics dry fast and even faster outside. Not only on the anvas but also on the pallette. This is not a problem unless you want to paint wet in wet. Keep mister bottle handy; you'll need it. I also recommend a sta-wet pallette.
PS. I like your painting. HAve you tuned up that lawn mower for the coming season?

Re: Outdoors for the first time ....
Hey, at least it's reconizable! My first couple of attempts went straight to the abstract collage gallery (dumpster). I still make make a few donations there . . but improving.
