Fly Past

I think this is more of a landscape with wildlife as an accessory.....;-)

Re: Fly Past

Wow, that waterfall is fantastic, this pic is of such a high level that this crit might sound a bit picky, but it is because it is such a good pic that I think you could do with something to make that bird really zing, there are different options, but I think basically they all revolve around adding a bit of punchy contrast somewhere to make the bird pop, could be darkening the shading on the wing? the obvious one is perhaps adding some darks behind himbut my feel is that you would need to be very subtle not to spoil the effect of the pic.

Please dont think that all that means I dont like the pic because that couldnt be further from my intention, this is a really excellent painting, beyond anything I have achieved myself

Re: Fly Past

Peter...
I will think long and hard about having part of the wing over brown rock....such as the rock to the right of the wing could come in a bit and cover 1/2 the wing.
As you mentioned, trying to be subtle is the hard part. Since this is part of a study anyway, I'll try it and re-post it....Thanks for the help.
I have absolutely no problem with any kind of suggestions or critique. They are all most welcome.

Re: Fly Past

This painting has an excellent sense of depth and serenity. I agree with Ceiliog - the bird does seem a bit camoflaged, although the orange on its beak helps it stand out. Great textures, too.

Re: Fly Past

I love the looseness of the background. I'm envious of anyone who can handle watercolors in that way! I agree that the bird could stand out more, but I wouldn't change anything. It's very nice the way it is.

Re: Fly Past

Thank you for all your kind remarks....I'm also of the opinion that the left side is a little weak, but then again, the bird is center stage.....;-)

Jody, Simon and Avie...
I hope to be able to expand on this "study" and with all the wonderful comments, I'm sure that it will end up as a full sheet.
I have been able to witness these guys flapping their huge wings.....almost in slow motion....

Re: Fly Past

Hi Brian,
This is beautiful. I like it the way it is, it has a dreamy feel to it. You know how in real life, you might catch a glimpse of a scene like this and then it's gone, like if you're not on the look out for something like this, you will never see it. And then, when you're ever lucky enough to see it, you say to yourself one of 2 things.. WOW! Did I really just see that? Or: Man! I wish I'd had my camera with me!! Well, luckily for us, you caught it in your painting :-) Just love it. Well done!

Re: Fly Past

hello Brian! Are you the artist who has a painting on kennewcombe.com? His photos are amazing as are your paintings! I'm Susie Slater aka Triumph and I have the owl posted on his site! That brings me to my question-where does one find an art show-juried or not- where this kind of work is featured? Thanks for your help!

Re: Fly Past

Susie...
Yes, I am he....and I saw your owl there.
I have to say that I don't have enough info to point you in the right direction as to specific wild life shows.
There must be some, but I just throw the wildlife stuff in with the rest since I really don't specialize.
Maybe you could ask the question in a separate thread.
I now owe Ken a few bucks since the Blue Heron sold during a weekend show.....poor guy won't get rich with my sales....;-)
