All that's Left
oil on board 12x16
This sign is all that's left of what was apparently a restaurant called Grandview Gardens in Los Angeles's Chinatown. There is now an empty lot behind the sign with lettering identifying the spot as Chinatownland.
I searched in vain for a picture of the original building, but have so far come up empty handed. I wasn't satisfied with the original lighting on this piece so I went back and did some glazing and re- stated paint into it. Now I like the lighting, but find the paint a tad overworked in places. They can't all make you totally happy.

That lilac tinge in the lower sky contrasted against the light evokes excitement upon seeing this painting. Emotional impact rules I guess.

Re: All that's Left
Bill, your use of color and light and eye for unusual subjects continues to astound me. Took a long, fast road trip over the weekend, and found myself looking differently at old industrial buildings and strip centers in every town I went through. You're giving my old eyes a new viewpoint. Beautiful!

Re: All that's Left
Hi Bill,
Oh man, this breaks my heart. I'm glad you at least got to paint the old sign for Grandview Gardens. Back in the 1960's, my Dad was one of the Golf Starters at Brookside Golf Course next to the Rose Bowl. A lot of wealthy and famous people played that course regularly....one of them was a man named Doc Wong who played on Sundays. He was the owner of Grandview Gardens since the late 40's. Before that his Doc's Dad owned it. A really nice man who played basketball at UCLA and also was an instructor in the Army Air Corps. He even gave my Dad a bottle of pre-war scotch.
My Dad used to get Dodger tickets from another guy who worked at Dodger stadium. At the time my brother and I were playing Little League my Dad would take us to see the Dodgers play on their Saturday games and we'd go have lunch at Grandview Gardens and my Dad would joke around with Doc.
The building itself was a very plain and modern style 1 story. It wasn't full of chinese type embellishments and my Dad said he didn't remember it having any windows at all. He also said Grandview Gardens and the Kwan Brothers Grandstar, owned by Frank and Wally Kwan, were the best restauraunts in Chinatown back then.
Your painting is AWESOME! Great backlighting on the sign Bill. What a sad day.
Ron

The painting is nice, but Ron's story trumps it.

Re: All that's Left
Typically fantastic painting, and a great story from Ron. Whenever I look at Bill's work (and it's often), I always think of how many people have seen the images represented in their daily lives and how many personal stories could be told. Whether it's an old car behind an abandoned house, or a sign left standing after the building's gone, people have been personally involved each step of the way, and you can feel it.
Wonderful stuff.

Great, great color and fantastic light - such a poetic rendering of a common place scene.

Bill, the light in this is fantastic.
The backstory by Ron makes it even more special.
I really like the crop, too.
