Master of the Month #32 - Mar/Apr 2007 (Andrew Wyeth)
Welcome To The Master Of The Month #32 !
This MOM study is Andrew Wyeth.
New Improved MOM
We are streamlining the MOM threads to give participants more choices, as well as make it a bit easier for whoever heads up the thread. So here's the new, improved concept:
You choose your own work to copy or learn from - all or part of the masterpiece.
Previously, participants chose a work from a limited posted selection. Now, a participant can focus on what challenges them personally.
We are not including photos or biography at the beginning of the thread.
Since there are plenty of online sources, we trust that you are able to research the material that interests you. Of course, if you can't find material, be sure to ask in a thread post and members can help point you to additional links and resources.

Re: Master of the Month #32 - Mar/Apr 2007 (Andrew Wyeth)
I think I'm going to give this one a try too I'd been downloading images from sites since last night. Today I saw a video demo on Danny Gregory's site and made an attempt at making Andrew Wyeth's portrait drawing and filling in a wash upside down And though his face has been made much narrower and longer, it was a super fun. This is just to help me move on from Matisse to Andrew Wyeth. Hope this MOM is as busy as the Modigliani one

A fabulous portrait, Ujwala. So expressive. He looks so immediate and ready to say something. To help with our painting, maybe?
Congrats on posting first. That was quick.
I will have a look at the video site you mentioned later. And also I have still to start my research into Wyeth's work.
I saw one of his egg tempera's in NZ years ago. So I am thinking of having a go in ET on a small scale as well as oils.
That's the plan. Luckily we've got 2 months to do it!!
PS I visited Danny Gregory's site but I don't have broadband, still on slow dial up, and so the video didn't register for me.

Re: Master of the Month #32 - Mar/Apr 2007 (Andrew Wyeth)
Found some Wyeth paintings to download. I like the portraits of women. Also 1 or 2 landscape ones catch my eye. It will be interesting to use a more muted/sombre palette.
Anyone know which colours he preferred for his palette? Certainly won't be my usual palette anyhow!!

Hi hopalong this is the thread for posting your work for this MOM. Thanks for your help over at the OP forum.
June : could you give me the link you've found for the Andrew Wyeth paintings. I've found very few references on my own so far.
I too am not clear on what the rules on using a particular medium are and maybe have been taking liberties so far

Re: Master of the Month #32 - Mar/Apr 2007 (Andrew Wyeth)
Hi Hopalong and welcome aboard. I'm a relative newcomer to this MOM forum too. About the same time as Ujwala. Modigliani & Matisse are all I've done so far.
This thread is in the oil painting forum, but I think its OK to use other mediums, e.g., OPs or digital, especially for preliminary sketches and ideas.
Anyway, most of Wyeth's work seems to have been in watercolour and Egg Tempera. So I guess we can use those mediums too!!
I did a Google images search for Wyeth, Ujwala. The references were all over the place and I didn't keep track of them. But I'm sure you'll find good ones if you - Google search. Sorry not to be more help with that!
I rather like the Helga series myself. Hope I can do one soon, but I'm up to my eyes at the moment so it may be a while.
Looking forward to seeing all the work by other participants tho'...

Re: Master of the Month #32 - Mar/Apr 2007 (Andrew Wyeth)
Thanks June. Saw your recommendation just today. I've started two watercolours using andrew wyeth's photographs. Just one layer of wash put in so far. I'm hoping it will look realistic as that is the plan And today with the url gave me I've found one of helga looking away and I'm hoping to give that a go too. hope to see one from you soon.
hopalong: looking forward to seeing your work. hope you're having fun in the library

A note about copying work of living artists
Because there was a question from one of the members about whether or not it's ok to copy works by living masters, here is what one administrator has to say:
Quote:
|
...it's fine to copy the works of master artists when they are used to study and learn, not for profit. That's a big part of what WC! is all about as an art education site.

Paint! Have fun!

Re: Master of the Month #32 - Mar/Apr 2007 (Andrew Wyeth)
It's my understanding that if you paint something done by an artist previously, using their painting as your guide, that when you sign it, you sign is with your name and then put "after the Van Gogh, Monet" or whomever is the original artists. Is this accurate? Gigi

Re: Master of the Month #32 - Mar/Apr 2007 (Andrew Wyeth)
I think its usually a good idea to say your work is a copy or a study 'after'..whoever the artist is. Especially if you plan to exhibit it, say on a website.
The copyright for an artist's work expires when he/she has been deceased for 70 years, I think.
It may mean that if you copy a living artist's work, it can be for private study and private viewing, only.
Not really certain, but I think its the case.
I still haven't done anything on Wyeth except download the paintings I like. Has anyone done any copying yet? It would be great to see some work!

Re: Master of the Month #32 - Mar/Apr 2007 (Andrew Wyeth)
When I left home at the end of March for a 10 day holiday I had thought that I'd be back home well in time to finish the watercolours that I had started. My holiday has got extended and I'll be back home only by the middle of May.
I hope to come back here soon after then with the 2 pieces that I had been working on. Will come back in a few days to see if there have been any other updates.

Re: Master of the Month #32 - Mar/Apr 2007 (Andrew Wyeth)
Hi everyone. As you can see, I've had a name change, but it is still me...stumptailmonkey.
I have not forgotten Wyeth. This morning I managed a small oil sketch of his painting 'Winter'. Its about 8 by 12 ins, painting paper, limited palette of cadmium orange (undercoat); alizarin, black, white and lemon yellow.
I really enjoyed doing this very restricted colour palette painting. And I think I'll try more like this..not necessarily Wyeth copies tho'. I may try the limited palette in my own works later!!
I have had pc problems and all my data got wiped so I haven't got the ref photo to show you to compare. I will search for it later on the net!! But maybe you know the reference?
Sorry about photo quality. Paint still wet, etc.
