Outdoor/Indoors today

My big painting for the year was going to be a steam train, but having found this 1924 Burrell and Sons Steam Roller in less than pristine condition, it's a working machine as the owner says, I thought it would be a great subject. It's in the owner's shed and will be painted as such, therefore not working. He drives!!! it to steam fairs all over the south of England, can you imagine the traffic behind him.

In two hours today until I got cold, I did this 20 x 250cm colour study on my pochade in Griffyn Alkyds for the first time. Then two ink studies and lots of photographs. I intend to visit again when the light is good, as he gave me the keys to the shed.

Derek, your painting is exciting. Yet, this is a topic that is so exciting in the line work. Perhaps it's all that authentic detail that a cyllinder-head like me can't get enough of. Classic machinery. The depth and fine detail you've added to the engine and the brake lines and inside the front wheel tell me so much. Your draftsmanship on the lines is also exciting!

Great work!

Thanks Brian, I started an oil of it yesterday based on my sketches. I have stayed with the idea of it being in the shed surrounded by stuff that goes with it or not.
