HOW I PAINT ON THE COMPUTER
Using Painter X
The first important step, is TO LEARN YOUR PAINT PROGRAMME! 
First I find a picture or idea that inspires me…If a picture, with lots of detail in it, I take it into Painter X (the only program I use at present) I then select all the picture copy it and paste in a new image…now for the beginning.
I put a new blank layer on top of the picture then click back onto the picture to select it go to “layers” and lift the canvas to watercolor layer…this puts the picture on top of my blank layer and the canvas layer becomes white. I then go to the watercolor layer and lower the opacity of it so I can trace off what I want on the blank layer using a 2B pencil in Painters pencil category. When I have it traced off I delete the watercolor layer and use the original next to what I am painting as a ref. Nine times out of ten I will paint on the canvas itself unless I come across an element that I feel I might have problems with then I will paint it on another layer and when I am satisfied with it I will drop it to the canvas (or merge). I also generally use my color picker to get the colors off the original .... of course this only gives you a general color so I lighten or darken depending on what I see.
Brushes…I have 7 favorite brushes that I use in all my paintings and one blender I use all the time..
1. Real Round Bristle (New in Painter 10)
2. Impressionist
3. Clumpy Brush (this is like using a filbert with little paint and blending with the existing paint)
4. Camel brush
5. Chunky Scrumble
6. My Fur brush
7. Digital Airbrush
8. Flat Grainy Blender sometimes I use the smudge brush.
Using these brushes is like using a Flat, Round, Filbert, Fan or Stipple brush in traditional painting. The blenders are like using a Flat or Fan brush to blend with or a big soft blending brush.
As far as painting …I usually start with the back and come forward such as wall, sky, etc and work my way to the front unless there is a stone table or shelf then I do the shelf or table before beginning the rest of the painting still putting in the background before painting the other elements in the piece. I tend to work all over the painting at times such as adjusting the lighting and values with paint as I go along. Basically just like you do when you are painting in oils or acrylics or watercolor adding lighter or darker values as you go along.
I hope I have cleared up some of the mystery of painting on a computer for some of you – it really is just like painting traditional without the clean up and mess. ;o)

This is a challenge from another group I belong to...this is also another A. Antonov painting (I just love his work!)
Since I am so much slower than Jean I thought I would put up the wip's of this also. Using Painter IX.5 ... Sandmans oils and the Artists Oils/Clumpy Brush, Flat Grainy Blender and a little Digital airbrush for color detail. I am also working on the canvas no layers with this one.
I am actually finding this one a little harder than the other still I did by him.
And this is where I am now have to stop for a while to let Nortons do it's thing.
