The tube is made of clear glass. There is a lamp inside that provides heat to make it bubble and provide light inside of the tube.

I have not found it since I moved, but I will keep looking for it. It would make a good candidate for 3D. It might even make a good 3D pulfrich effect video. (a 3D system sometimes used on tv programs that requires 3D glasses. It works only as long as the camera is panning or there is motion going across the screen. I believe it was used in an episode of Third Rock from the Sun and one of the infamous Howard Stern videos. It seems to work pretty well in the old John Wayne westerns!)
