Black Lab sketch in pencil

Hi Everyone,

This is a sketching of a Guide Dog puppy in training named Sonar that I puppy sat for some time. I need a little bit of help on blending fur...my tendency is to blend it all together and it ends that the fur has no definition really. So I havn't really started to attempt to do any blending on this one. So, any and all comments would be appreciated.

Thanks!

~Rachel

Hi and Welcome Rachel! Its a very nice drawing! I don't know how to help you with your question but your darks and lights look good to me and give the dogs body definition. It looks like a short hair dog to me so I don't think you really need to do much more on the fur. Maybe someone else more experienced in graphite will be along to give you some tips! Are you using different grades of pencils and what kind and size paper is this? I have always been in awe of people who raise these dogs and are so selfless to give them up to those in need.

To be honest, I am totally new at experimenting with a set of pencils I got that range from 4H to 8B and the paper is 9/12 "Acid Free Sketch paper". It's not very specific.

Hi Rachel. I really like your drawing - I think you've given it a beautiful soft look.

I used to have a guide-dog myself as I'm partially sighted and I know how important the work of puppy-walkers is. I'm sure that the visually impaired person that Sonar goes on to help - in such a huge way - will appreciate that work as much as I did.

Barry.

Thankyou! Barry, It is very exciting to learn that you have experienced having a guide dog! I raised two for Guide Dogs For the Blind; the first one is currently a working guide and the other one was dropped from the program but is now in another service dog training. Training the dogs definitely changed my life.
