framing works on paper

I have a question about framing works on paper in ready made frames?

Has this question been dealt with in another thread or should I proceed here?

I'm sure it's been addressed in the past. I'll try to find some info for you. It might be a good idea to post in the pastel and water color forums as well, since they both deal with paper supports.

A suggestion that I heard somewhere....

If you want to use ready made frames (that already have mats and glass) for your watercolors....Take the mat and lay it on top of your watercolor paper, then draw a light pencil line to show the mat outline...or just measure and draw the line (wouldn't want a smudge on the mat). The painting will be the size of the cut-out in the mat and will fit perfectly in the frame.

A word of caution....the mats in these frames are usually not archival quality. That's why they are cheaper. And be sure you remove any cardboard backings and replace with foamcore to protect your painting! Cardboad is very high in acid and will discolor your artwork over time.

Hi Carly,
I thought that to use ready made frames for paintings on paper that:
assuming the matte is 2" that you should paint your piece in a blocked off area, and leave a 2" border around the image you want to frame.

If your paper and the mat are the same size, this will work. You can also leave more white space within mat...for a white border (white paper showing) around the painting.

That may be what you meant!

or...you can float the work on top of the mat. Hinge it with linen tape or hinges made from rice paper. Use rice paste to adhere. That's how the printmakers do it.
