Re: Post Your Chinese Brush / Sumi-e Paintings here.
Sandra- I went to the local Jerry's, but at the time they were out of white....as I recall Cheng-Khee Chee used some sort of wallpaper paste from the hardware stores...had been using it for 30 years and said it was archival.

Sorry, Sandra --
I tried painting Chinese once, but they kept running away! ;D
I guess I just have a devious mind...

Re: Post Your Chinese Brush / Sumi-e Paintings here.
I painted my cat tonight, but my daughter says he doesn't look any different.
Scavenger Hunt 181, #22 - Someone I Love
8 1/4" x 11 3/4"
Sakura Koi pan watercolor, black monochrome
90lb cold press watercolor paper (A4 Moleskine Folio watercolor journal)
He kept moving around in his sleep so I painted fast. I should do this more often, it always works so well. It may not be traditional just grabbing Koi watercolor pans and a water brush but it comes so easy when I use those tools.

Very lovely Robert!! I really enjoy how loose you can paint Ari! Terrific poses!
Someday I will pop open my book on Sumi-e and give it a whirl!

Re: Post Your Chinese Brush / Sumi-e Paintings here.
Thought I would see if WC had anything on Chinese Brush painting/Japanese sumi-e and voila; a few interesting pieces
posted a few years ago.
Just starting out with a couple of Chinese courses in Toronto with a master, William Ho.
Next week I am enrolled in a sumi-e class in Haliburton Ontario at the Haliburton School of the Arts (Fleming College). A semester in one week painting 9-5 Monday to Friday. Awesome.

It's a lot of fun. I've definitely enjoyed doing it and will be doing more.

Re: Post Your Chinese Brush / Sumi-e Paintings here.
HankL, welcome to this thread. Do show us some of your work when you have time.
Robert, good cat there.
I got this little guy in mind while waking up today.
Played around with Yasumoto color in pan form testing colors and how opaque they could be. Some colors are more opaque than others. Very interesting feel to it. The Chinese light green definitely is very opaque!
Then took out the Marie's Chinese watercolor and first did a few strokes of water, and then the rock. Then it all came together what I wanted to paint today. To bring color and a fuller view to Chinese painting in traditional subjects.
I photographed it wet so that it's not totally wrinkled yet but this piece would be starched one day for safekeeping and mounting.
These rice paper are so much cheaper than watercolor paper that I could experiment so much more freely.

Good blades of grass there. They look slightly windblown and the flowers dangled so well! with very good strokes. Is this newsprint you are using?
Angora cat fur would have been expensive! LOL.

Re: Post Your Chinese Brush / Sumi-e Paintings here.
Hi everyone,
I bought some Chinese watercolor and rice paper in my recent trip to China. I tested on some 3" X 9" strips of the high absortbent paper. Marie's watercolor (everything on the box and tubes is in Chinese) was used on the first three. W&N watercolor pan field kit was used on the last one. I posted in Watercolor studio, then Doug sent me here.

Nguyen, welcome to the thread. Good flowers there. I like the seond one and the mix of colors and the third one too. Very much like the real peach blossom. Which paint do you like better? W&N or Marie's?

Re: Post Your Chinese Brush / Sumi-e Paintings here.
Hi gakinme, it's too early to know which paint I like better. I read that only Chinese watercolor can stand the wet starch applied to the back of the paper for stretching. Western watercolor will bleed.
