Backside first, Frontside last....

On translucent Yupo, 20" x 24". Acrylic on the backside as the under-painting, Front is Grumbacher watercolors. Doesn't take a great mind to figure out the outcome is reversed from the under-painting

Thank you for your critique and comments....not ever tackled something this large. No photo reference. Just wanted to place a city and mountain landscape together. Actual title is "Go Tell It On The Mountain" from the hymn by John Work, Jr and John Work, III.

Well, the title roped me in.....wondering how you got past the "Butt icon"
Quite the technique.....one which I had never heard of before, but then again, I don't get out much....;-)
Well done....a glowing sky.

Absolutely AMAZING!! What a beautifully glowing sky... and the underpainting gives this so much depth... You have a terrific technique, here!

Re: Backside first, Frontside last....

Marianne, Thank you for your kind comments.

Yupo is a plastic paper. I think there are some demonstrations on this site and there are several on the web. Watercolor is not absorbed by the paper. You can see through the translucent paper as if it were frosted glass. Paint is lifted off the paper leaving a blank space. In this instance, the paint on the reverse side shows through to the front in a fuzzy kind of way.

All of my watercolors have been done on Yupo. Google www.yupo.com and they will send you some free samples.

Hi! Slcox, thanks for the reply & explanation, I have printed off your post. Sounds like it is similiar to Vellum only plastic. it has such an interesting effect. Regards, marianne

Re: Backside first, Frontside last....

You're right. It has the appearance of Vellum. I've tried to watercolor on Vellum and it wrinkles!!!! This stays smooth and can be sprayed with a sealer and coated with Acrylic varnish to keep the paint on the paper. Otherwise, a 'sneeze' can leave water marks!!!

Re: Backside first, Frontside last....

Sandra, I really love this!!!! Now I am inspired. I have had a piece of Yupo that whispers my name every once in a while. I tell it to hush, I'm not ready. But I just might get it out!!!!!!!

i love the glow you've achieved. It looks as though you painted pretty strong color on the back am I right? Do you start light to dark? Now I'm full of questions. I've never seen a piece on yupo like this. I've only seen very free and loose work, so this is totally new to me. thanks for sharing, keep em coming!

Re: Backside first, Frontside last....

Thanks Arlene. I appreciate your taking time to comment, Welcome to the Watercolor forum. Great people here...you will learn a lot!

Margaret, If you will look for other threads I have started, you will find 2 additional paintings using the transparent Yupo. The balance of my work is on the 'regular' Yupo. It is very interesting to work with.

The process I have followed on this type Yupo is to do a VERY rough sketch...lay the Yupo over the top...paint with just craft grade acrylics using colors you want to show on the reverse side....let it dry thoroughly...turn over and use regular watercolors on the side that will be the 'right' side.

I have found that if you do not have some areas of your under-painting just as you would like, they can be wet down with plain water and the acrylic paint scraped off and a new color applied.

This doesn't work like glass. What ever acrylic color you use to under-paint with, is what you will see on the other side. Enjoy...Sandra
