Comp #92 (Stones & Rocks) Entries - Vote Here!

We have a nice variety of shots for this comp. There are a lot of ways to interpret "Stones & Rocks" and I'm glad to see that no one submitted that picture of a mountain in the distance that I didn't want to see. The only qualification was that one should be able to see individual rocks and stones.

Remember, or at least try to remember, that we are judging based on technical merit, whether the entry is "on topic" or not, and on the artistic interpretation of the subject.

One vote per person - vote will be public. Click on the thumbnails to see the full-size images before you vote, please.

1) Pebble Covered Beach - Mexico

2) Stones on Stone

3) Laid Bare – For a While

4) Stoney Creek

5) Stone Wallin’

6) Crystal

7) Fire-Agate

8) Crystal, Pyrite and Shards

Next post has the remaining entries.

9) Jurassic Coast

10) Yellowstone Rock

11) Rocky Stream

12) Sunset Rocks

13) Rock Garden

14) Caves Entrance

15) Rocks and Lichen in Winter

16) Tent Island

17) River Rock

That's all there are, but that's plenty. I guess this was a pretty popular topic. Now, check them out, do a critique, and vote!

Ray

(Sorry about the lack of numbers in the poll for the entries. When I previewed the poll, it had double numbers, so I took the numbers out that I had put in. Of course, as soon as I posted the poll, the other set of numbers also disappeared. I guess I must have never previewed a poll before when I posted one, otherwise I would have known that.)

What a great response rate to the topic. Well done Ray on getting the comp up. I am sure we will cope without numbers.

Re: Comp #92 (Stones & Rocks) Entries - Vote Here!

I dunno if I'm having a bad day or what, but there isn't one picture in there that jumps out and makes me vote for it.

I had a still life in my head along the lines of fung shui (or however it's spelt...) but I couldn't find my flashgun, I think I've left it at the studio up in London.

Holy Schmoley, Hon ! Am I glad it's your turn this week and not mine!!! I wouldn't know what to do with that many entries!!! Well done - as always - no prob with the missing numbers - like Carol, I learned to read in Grade School

Bet Deb gets a slug of them, too, next week with her chosen topic - it'll be a popular one! (Limber up those typing fingers, Deb!!!)

Charlie - WHAT??????????? You didn't enter??????????? Sheesh ... Hope something grabs you before the voting is over - otherwise you may have to go technical to decide ...

Cheers,
Sue

Re: Comp #92 (Stones & Rocks) Entries - Vote Here!

All I can say is that I hope we get some voters showing up here. It would be funny if we wound up with a seventeen-way tie.

Charlie - yeah, my photo sucks.

Sue

Yeah good way to break me in huh! I will probably need help...though my daughter says she knows how to do the click on thumbnail thing. I'm a little scared.

Ray- 17 way tie...LOL it's looking like it might just happen!

I didn't enter this comp. I didn't really have anything.
Don't have time to do a comp. but I just want to say that I like these two best
Sunset Rock- Love the colors and the sun shinning through.
Stones on Stone- Really like these earthy colors and the composition.

Re: Comp #92 (Stones & Rocks) Entries - Vote Here!

Been away for a couple of weeks, but here's my "critique". well at least a line or two on each entry....

1. Love all the different colours in this, but the leaf in the toright corner keeps grabbing my attention.

2. Looks posed.

3. Nothing here for me. Perhaps a lower angle or maybe when the tide was almost covering the rocks would be better.

4. Hard to make out.

5. Doesn't do it for me. Maybe longer shadows.

6. Great close-up. One of my favourites.

7. If it wasn't for the title, I wouldn't know what this is.

8. As No.2

9. Not sure about this one.

10. Very dark. Hard to make out.

11. I like this one. The water gives the picture movement.

12. Good shot. I don't like the fingers though.

13. More about the plantlife than the rock.

14. Well composed picture, but the cave rather than the rocks is the focal point.

15. As No. 13

16. Reminds me of a weathered skull. Great colours in this. Another favourite.

17. The water seems more central than the rocks in this one.

Great to see so many entries. Hope this bodes well for competitions in 2007!!!

Oh! I missed this one! I had one that I could have probably put up, too.

Re: Comp #92 (Stones & Rocks) Entries - Vote Here!

yes, that was harder than expected. #2 Stones on Stones got my vote. While i agree it looks a little staged, I do like the composition and I find the lighting very pleasing. My second favorite was the tray of shards, but I found the light a little harsh, so I opted for the other. Nice selection everyone! Val

No offense to anyone either, but I have to agree with Charlie on this one. Nothing jumps out at me. Sorry! This was a tough comp I think!

Re: Comp #92 (Stones & Rocks) Entries - Vote Here!

No, none of them "jumps out" at me, either. A topic like "Stones & Rocks" sounds like it should be easy. Well, it is - what's hard is coming up with something that has that "wow" factor. I think next week's comp will be the same. Sunsets and Sunrises are dramatic in themselves, so getting a shot that will rise above all the others will be awfully hard.

I like the assortment of colors in #1, so that's what I'm going to vote for.
