New Years Show and Tell

This is a pot that my 11 year old and I made together. We did it using a ceramics mold and did a puzzle piece with two different colors of clay. Levi made the balls and snakes and I put the piece together. He was also the critic and helped me to finish the piece.

Here are a couple of pieces I have done lately. the finished piece was just a very quick sculpt that I started and then set aside until it was almost too dry to work with, then decided to fire and glaze it anyway. I thought the end result was kind of neat. The unglazed piece was of my wife's Palamino show horse. It will look better finished, but I used a brown clay for the body, and a lighter, greyish clay for the mane. I am not sure it will survive the kiln process, so I thought I would share now. If it works out I'll post the finished piece when done. Comments welcome, thanks for looking.

Hi Carla,

Cute pot and idea to do with children. I'm sure he had lots of fun helpiing. Tell him it's very cute and he did a great job.

Shane- I really like the finished horse and the base too. The glaze looks perfect for it. What's the name of this glaze? I'd like to get that one. You're second horse, even though you did it really quick, has a clean sleek feel to it and looks good too.

Tamara, The glaze is Gare---White birch NTG-9529. I really was pleasantly surprised too. Hey, do you have any suggestions as to how better to mount the bust sculpts to a more interesting base? I need something big enough to hold the weight of the head and neck up, but still be less obtrusive and more artistic.

Thanks for the name of the glaze. I don't have any of the Gare glazes. Going to check some of those out. I particularly like the glazes that mimic the high fire glaze look and this one has that quality.

I like your base because it's simple and organic looking. I too am new at figuring out bases for my busts and I came up with the same idea as you for my Noelle base. :-)



With the nose of your horse sticking out, it needs more base at least in that direction. You could make a wooden square at the bottom that the clay attaches too. Or the next time, make a beveled edge on the clay at the bottom which makes a larger footprint.

I'm going to experiment with taking some left over granite slab and chipping up the edge randomly and making bases with that.

Maybe someone else will have more suggestions for ya. I need em' too.
