"Untitled" sculpture in progress and some extra stuff
Hi all
From the 30-60-90 abstract project which is now called "untitled" for now. I am thinking of calling it "wings" or "souring" something like that. I need to wait and see what type of feeling it gives me.
So here are a couple of pics that show several layers of Winterstone ,more strength coats than anything else. The cardboard armature worked well. The only issue I had was some separation of the two layers I glued together from the moisture. But was able to overcome this. I will use this techniques again. I also used a hand blender to mix the Winterstone and "boy" did that make a big difference. Winterstone is a lot like mashed potatoes, there can be lumps and you do not want that.
I also worked on the base this weekend. The base will be made of cement and is a 6" square that is 3" tall. I created the mold from Plexiglas using hot glue to join the edges. When I am ready I will pour Portland cement into it and let dry and stay in the mold for about 2 to 3 weeks. The pic here shows the mold filled with water so I can see if there are any leaks.... and there was, just have to go back and glob on the hot glue....all ready now, no leaks.
Also here is a pic of a glass vase that I filled with cement. The vase has a nice criss-cross pattern to it. Will cut open in about 2 to 3 weeks and let you see what it looks like.
Well that's it for now. Take care all and have a great week.

Yielding,
This piece is coming along well....thanks for the update pictures. I like the ideas you have presented here. I never would have thought that a glue gun would hold a cement mold, that's great to know. I was thinking another way to mix the winterstone would be with a drill and one of those paint mixing attatchments, do you know what I mean? Would that work too?
I think the glass vase is part of the 'In His Hands' sculpture(?), I can't wait to see that one again too.
I know you said you are thinking about 'wings' and 'soaring' and haven't decided on a name yet but I see underwater creatures again Just thought I'd mention it I hope you have a great week as well.

Hi Yielding:
What an interesting thread this is going to be. I was trying to think of some thing else to add but I think Maggie has some really good thoughts. So I'm just going to set back and watch the magic happen. Well be thinking of some possible titles for your sculpt too.
Keep up the good work and those images coming.
Best,
Kathy
PS: I have sculpture class tonight and can get started laying on the clay to that armature.

Hi Maggie - the drill idea would work i sure, you would just have to test it out. I don't mix that much at a time. If I was mixing a big batch I would go with the drill idea.
The glass vase is just a test. The one for In HIS Hands is a glass ball. Had to stop working on this one because I need to sand the side piece. I need to sand out side... so waiting for a nice day here. Winter is over and things are starting to warm up. Hope to have it done by the end of summer.

Hey Yeilding
This is looking good. Great start here. Thanks for posting pics as you go. We all enjoy seeing how others do things and gives us ideas too.... The drill with a drywall compound mixer blade would be perfect for a large batch. But if you decide to try that one day, you may want to be sure to use a 1/2" drill as the motor on a 3/8" will burn out fast. Just had to add my 2 pennies worth I love the top view on this one. Makes me think of someone dancing...swirling round and round for some reason. That's what my mind sees anyway. Can't wait to see how the vase comes out.

Looking good.
I thought it was a Bishop's Headpiece, or even a Freemason's.

Hi Yielding:
This is coming along nicely. I was wondering if you could show us another view? It is to me taking on a very spacial look from the view you have here almost spaceship like. Or maybe like something that would orbit in space. "The New Frontier"
How are you feeling about your work on it so far, and what do you want it to convey?
Best,
Kathy

Thanks for the comments Kathy. Here are some extra pics. I just started working/ filling in the back side.
Not certain what feel I am looking for here. I do like the aspect of motion that seems to be coming out. But I'm not certain yet... need more time with it and see how it interacts with the base. It takes on a whole new look when setting on base. You all will have to wait for that progress pic. I have been doing a lot thinking of how I will attach the sculpt to the base. Think I have a good solution.... the sculpt is very heavy and needs to be very secure.

Hi Yielding,
Looks like you have been keeping busy, I can see what you mean about the motion effect here. It takes on a different meaning with each angle. I think that is one of the beauties of abstract, having many sculpts in one. I look forward to seeing it all come together. Thanks for the new pics.

Have been layering and shaping all week. This is the final angle it will sit. Pic of base after I poured Portland cement into mold. Will let dry until ready to attach sculpture on base. When will that be.... ????
I also added a pic of the progress and what I spent part of my doing. "THE MASTERS"
Have a great week

Thanks for the comments Linda
I poured the base and it did not come out right. I think I used the wrong cement, need type 2 portland and I used Quickcrete this time. O well cement is only $6 us dollars for 100 pounds.
Here is pic of what it will look like on the base.

Yielding,
I think it turned out very well. Love the lines. What are you going to do with the base? Are you going to paint it, cover it with tile, etc.? Also, how much does it weigh without the base?
