Lightbulb art teacher web sites for their students

Hello, I am new to WC and I love it! I am a high school art teacher in virginia with a new web site I just put up for my students in the classes I am teaching this semester; Drawing, Art Foundations and Photography (Painting and advanced art is in the fall). It has their lessons, links, Announcements, lots of student art and my stuff. It is a great tool for my classes and with the new technology standards I would love to see more sites like this. I got the idea from Henrico school system in Virginia. They are very advanced technology wise and all their teachers have sites. It will not replace humans but is a great aid and a place for students to see their art on-line

Take a look and let me know what you think if you have time
The address is long...it is linked in my profile

Barbara:

I spent some time at your teacher/sudent website and and found it to be delightful. I agree, having all the assignments on a website really makes it clear what is expected for both student and parent. I loved getting to read about the assignments and then clicking on some of the student art to see how they handled themselves. What a great group of students you must have. You truly must enjoy seeing their progress.

I look forward to seeing more student images. Your lessons combined with the website is indeed a great way to encourage development. I would love to see what they would come up with using techniques from "Scribble Story". Their minds must be exploding with ideas and what a fun group to be around.

Hello llis,
Thank you for the time you spent at my site. Do you teach? and What grades? I started the site because I first of all loved the idea of having this as a backup and students/parents being able to see their work online. I also had a number of students last semester who were expelled, in juvinile detention (jail) or on a long term sick leave. It was so hard trying to get the work to them (which we are required to do). Know I can just direct them to this site.
I would love to see more schools adopt a better technology program and move towards this. It will take many years to happen. The speed of the internet is to slow at most schools (including mine) You can not ever replace the human element but techbnology is a great tool!
Also, is the text overlaped on the home page. It is not on most computers but it is on some. What do you see on yours.

Barbara:

No, I'm not a teacher, have little formal training in art, but I do teach some volunteer classes at our local private school,4-5 grades, because they have no art teacher at all. I only have one son who is now 28 and I do miss having little kiddies around. Maybe one day I'll have some grandchildren. Hope so.

When I went to your website, I did see some overlapping, but not all the text is overlapped... just in a few places. I chalked it up to my computer connection because I have been experiencing weird things here lately. I am on a cable connection and my speed has slowed to an average of around 100 kbs. sigh...they are working on it. LOL

Also, I got a call Friday from a local retirement home that want someone to do art lessons. This will be a paid job and I'm looking forward to checking that out.

Scribble Story is just an art activity that I made up to do with my son when he was little. I think I might try this with the seniors and see what happens. LOL

I sure wish that you would check out the article publisher here on WC! and put up some lesson plans or ideas. If you need help, I'll be more than glad to do that.

One idea I had was to do an article all about design and some of the things to consider when thinking about when you create art. So many, including me, would benefit from something like this and it might be a good way for you to add links for additional information on your website. You could talk about specific design elements, and give some exercises.... you could even add in some of your student work as examples if they will let you. Wow...my head is spinning with ideas that would work in this format. Let's see what we can do.

Glad you liked Scribble Story. It was fun.

Can't wait for you to put some lesson plans together. I know there are a ton a teachers out there, but this forum moves rather slow. Maybe with your input, other teachers will find us and be able to share what they are doing as well. Thanks so much!

web sites for students

Dear Barbara:
I just joined yesterday and found this thread today. I looked at and liked your web site. Yes, there were overlaps.
However, if you look at it as a work of art, it's a process. Like the apocryphal story of the old man tackled by guards at the Louvre as he was putting paint on a masterpiece. It was Renoir, trying to fix something he saw in one of his own works!
Seriously, it is an excellent and well put together job.
I teach art & business at two community colleges - one of which is in the forefront of developing the virtual campus. But we have nothing like this there yet. I'm going to talk to the IT guru about it.
Could you tell me what's needed to get something like this going?

Hi Paul,

glad you liked the site. I thought I had fixed the overlap problem. It is weird every computer handles it different and it is only on the home page

Here are some other sites you should look at.

http://teachers.henrico.k12.va.us/henrico/guyer_m/
( I will send the other address in a separate reply. I need to look it up in my favorites)

These two guys are from the same school district. They used Dreamweaver, PhotoShop and word I believe. Mr Guyer is now revising his to use Flash. I got really inspired when I saw their sites and so I tried my own. I did not have access to Dreamweaver so I used a program they were trying out at my school called Lectora. It is designed specificly for teachers. I also use a lot of PhotoShop and word documents.

Good luck with everything and let me know how it goes!

Exclamation GOOD JOB!

I loved your site & giddyly used your links page

I've been trying to convince my professor husband that an art site is worth the time it would take. He is known for his handouts re-routing students to web-sites... and it's been quite successful for him. I've been working on compiling them so that we can put them to the winds of cyberspace soon, and this thread may be what I need to finally win him over.

I'm linking to a great friends site for her students.

PS~~ Greetings fellow newbies and seasoned posters... I haven't met everyone yet but I'll get around to it eventually...

Hello Shauna and welcome,
It has been a while since I have been here. I have been so busy this summer getting ready for the fall. I am very glad you like the site and are planning on one too (your husband). As you can see this thread did not generate a lot of interest.
Actually I was working on the site when I got notice that you wrote in. I am changing the Drawing assignment section with new stuff.
The site is a lot of work but in the long run it is so helpful. I got so tired of running off copies of handouts and the kids just leaving them around only to ask for another later. I also sometimes have kids who are sick, go on vacation, go to jail or get expelled. it is helpful to have them just log on for the assignments. I just have to send the supplies.
I loved the site you listed. It was fun. Good luck with your husbands site and let me know if there is anything I can do to help.
