Under the trees

MY IMAGE(S):

GENERAL INFORMATION:
Title: Under the trees
Year Created: 2006
Medium: Acrylic
Surface: Board
Dimension: 12x16
Allow digital alterations?: Yes!

MY COMMENTS:
I was not sure I wanted to post this one. Anyway, here it is.

It is based on Dsimmons Wip "Old MExican House" (http://www.wetcanvas.com/forums/showthread.php?t=380687). I don't have David's talent but if I never try and fail, I will never succeed ...

The first image is my value study, the second is my final result and the third is my reference from the Library (thanks to whoever post is there).

I know it can be dramatically improved but I'm quite satisfied with the result (for me ...). The linear perspective might be improved as well as the light on the bench.

My Haïku title on this one (the rules of HaiKu 5-7-5 syllables does match in French but not in English ...):

Hot summer day
On the bench under the trees
Light is dancing

MY QUESTIONS FOR THE GROUP:
Anything. I'm still learning ...

Re: Under the trees

Hi , Daniel,
It seems that you have the right idea about my approach, I would suggest trying simpler subjects also. In this piece it seems we should have taken more time with the first step(mapping out the values) before we jump into the color. "Values do all the work and color gets all the glory" The placement of the light and dark value notes in the initial stages should be as accurate as we can manage, but still loose. The piece shows how with this method, we can tackle complicated subject and not become daunted. Good job. WE MUST ALWAYS CONSIDER COLOR NOTE FIRST, OBJECT SECOND.

Re: Under the trees

David, it's an honor for me that you took time to drop a comment on this. Your work REALLY REALLY impressed me and I would really like to be able to do half of what you are doing.

The value study is new for me. I read often on wetcanvas (comp & design forum particularly) that we should to a thumbnail value study before starting a painting but I never do that (unfortunatly). I tend to take my knife and jump right away into the painting.

I used to draw with my knife and block forms with dark paint when I start a painting. I then apply lights afterward. Your lesson is new for me: concentrate on values and forget about the forms (on the first session). I have to give up my old habit!

Thanks again for your feedback ... There will be other attempts in a near future ...

Have a nice day.

Re: Under the trees

I like you feeling that if you dont jump in and fail, you might never succeed. It's in the doing 1000 times over that I feel I learn things to not (hopefully repeat). Also this wet canvas gives us some feeback with other great artist eyes. I personally feel you acheived getting the light. It is very loose and impressionistic. Thats a style that some love. Good luck and keep going.
