Re: How to Produce (and Sell) Prints of your Artwork

Hi everyone,

I am very new to WC and still spending more time navigating between the forums and doing a lot of reading and learning. I just want to say thank you for posting How to Produce (and Sell) Prints of your Artwork. You provided a wealth of information, some of which I knew, a LOT that I didn't. I ended up bookmarking it for future reference since this is where I am at right now with my art work. I guess I am still surprised that some people are willing to buy my stuff.

I look forward to getting to know some you all.

Brie

Dave, how do you get larger prints copied digitally? Do you ever photograph or do you always suggest taking it to a printing press?

Thank you so much Dave, as an artist trying to get back into following my passion after the military. This article was tremendously helpful with my future in the art world. I know your information is the tip of the iceberg, but it has given me a foundation to start with. Thanks again. Elias

Re: How to Produce (and Sell) Prints of your Artwork

This is really great! Thank you for helping the rest of us.

*I hope it didn't slip by me in all the info, but I would like to know if you have an idea on what to charge for a (Signing).

Not long ago, I did 5 pen and ink drawings for a museum, and retained the copyright. Now they want to make prints of them and sell a limited edition. I'll sign and number each, and will be paid 10% for each that is sold.

I would like to know what is the customary fee for signing the prints? Or do most artist work at that in hopes the percentage will pay them for their time in the future?

thank you very much for any help.

Re: How to Produce (and Sell) Prints of your Artwork

Congratulations on the commission MT Grave, yes 10% is generous, 3 or 4% is nearer the norm .
Make it clear that they will do all the printing & that you have the final say on the printers proof to maintain a quality control on the public presentation of your work.
It is usual to get a few free prints (artists proofs).
It would be best if you had a written contract too, if you google art licencing contracts you should be able to get something.

With art licencing you don't expect to make a lot of money 99 times out of a hundred but more a long steady drip feed over time, after a while if you've got a number of these deals running alongside other art business they can be a useful steady bonus income.
Your deal sounds more personal & OK but speaking more generally there are hundreds of sharks in the licencing field it really is a matter of trust as to how many they've sold & who else they've sold the rights to reproduce to etc, etc.
People promising you money for work you've done now & they'll pay later at an undisclosed & uncertain time is a relationship of trust -BE CAREFULL !

Re: How to Produce (and Sell) Prints of your Artwork

That's very helpful Pedlars Pen, and thank you.

So, it sounds as though I'll be making enough off the royalty, and may not want to ask for more to hand sign each print.

We do have a contract, but it doesn't allow reproduction. I'll most certainly take your advice while writing the permission to reproduce, and ask for proofs as well.

thanks again for this help!
