ballpoint drawings

I'm working on honing my ballpoint pen skills. I've found that artists like Samuel Silva are fascinating, in how they can draw so much with just a simple ballpoint pen! I can't hold a finger to any of them...but this is a start.

This lion is a work-in-progress: It's about 8 x 12, while the others are smaller:

Re: ballpoint drawings

I use a BIC biro ballpoint pen, medium point. I want to add color, but haven't gotten myself a set yet. I'm planning on getting a 8 set of BIC cristal pocket scents, but right now I'm working in black and white.

Re: ballpoint drawings

Here's a drawing I plan on turning into a ballpoint pen drawing. It's Benny Hinn. I believe in this guy.

I still need a lot of work in my drawing skill; I've been drawing mostly cartoony anime-ish drawing and finally decided to take on realism fairly recently. Any tips would be appreciated.

Re: ballpoint drawings

Oh yeah, today in class I finished a portrait of Michael Ketterer. I'm not too pleased with the nose, and this is a new angle for me. (Actually, drawing people's faces in general is pretty new to me). But overall I'm glad it even resembles him.

Re: ballpoint drawings

Nice drawings! I am very much a fan of ballpoint myself. I find it kind of terrifying to work with because errors cannot be erased, but also exhilarating for the same reason.

Very nice tones you get there. I am usually very reluctant to fill in much tone because somehow my tone always ends up looking like scratches rather than tone, and I never seem able to keep my touch light enough. This is especially true when drawing portraits of children or young women, who have smooth skins and smooth curves. So my own ballpoint drawings tend to be mostly linear, and I envy your use of tone here.

Re: ballpoint drawings

Thanks! I'm glad it looks like I'm improving.

I've been a little sloppy on the linework recently, I shall strive to improve...
