Re: Mt. Saint Helens

I think the volcano, plume, and tree covered mountains are all superb because they really show the imensity. The crimson hot areas work well but the yellow areas lose me. Their uniform size and their spread from the volcano all throughout our right side makes me wonder what they are and throws off the size perspective a little. I suppose they could be settlement lights but I didn't think there was that much population close to the volcano so instead I assume that's part of the hot spots.

Woooooosh!
Great action.
I'm suspecting that the yellow is played up in the digital?

Re: Mt. Saint Helens

Thank you all for the useful comments. It seems that the Cad Yellow was a problem. Does it read better now?

Re: Mt. Saint Helens

this does have more drama ... are you working from a reference? ... i'm wondering how the yellow streaks are created in the eruption ... it seems their source is from below .... but i know nothing about volcanic eruptions ...

Re: Mt. Saint Helens

this specific eruption exploded out the [almost] entire side of a mountain.

i've been trying to warm up to this corvus because i like the idea. my personal vision would have the viewer closer to the action. yours shows all the action in the sky, which is great, dramatic, i like the yellow streaked, and it all could be the focal point more.

the foreground is great too, provides some depth, contrast, even balance i suppose, so it very much depends on what focus your after ...

anyway, i see but don't feel the [massively, powerfully explosive] vibration and i wish i could tell you [and me] how to paint that.

most respectfully,
la

Re: Mt. Saint Helens

Nice work Corby.... I somehow liked the first version, it seemed to leave more to the imagination. And there was more dance between the hot drama, and the cool calm and serene foreground.

Re: Mt. Saint Helens

I like this picture, especially the colours. But i have to say, that i like the first version. In the second there is too much dynamic for me.

The size of the picture seems small to me. Wouldn't it be great on an bigger format?

But i would like to be able to make a picture like this!

Fred

Re: Mt. Saint Helens

my...where did this come from?...
Thank you gaensanger for bringing it to my attention again! It is interesting how a small change can so affect the dynamics of a painting. The first version is a bit more cohesive. The foremat is to small to effectivly deal with it either way. I am constrained by circumstances from doing things of any great size if I am to post them here and on my gallery. Thanks for the comment. It made me have a look at the painting again.
Vector9 Thanks for looking. Your observation is right on.
Anthony Dunphy Hhehehe....opposite viewpoint, but also right on I think. Either view of this is workable. To bring the viewer to unanimity I think the work needs to be larger and not so generic. It was done from a small photo ( pre-eruption). A larger foremat with more specific information is called for if it is to be truly effective I think.
HelllooooLA! I am inclined to share your ambivalence about this. Intertesting how our own views are subtly expressed in how we put something down on canvas!
Hi Violet !Yes there was a pre-eruption reference for this, but there was not a great deal of effort put into following it. The result is a generic view of most any mountain. St Helens did not blow her top she blew out her whole side. Hence the streaming of molten material to the right side.
