Peach Rose - Pastel & CP's Step by Step demo

Hello everyone, atlast I got around in doing this demo I had been experimenting with pastelpencils(derwents) and cp's(prisma's) and found the results quite impressive. I found out that Derwent pastel pencils were not found in open stock. So I thought it would be better if I try with pastels , so for this piece I tried the faber castell pastel set(48 colors) I got at Daniel smith for $15, there was some differences I encountered during the process, but I got around to make it work for me.

Step 1 - I just have a plain line drawing on Sand Colorfix 9X12 using col erase pencils.

Step 2 - I start laying down the colors, better to go dark to light so that the lighter colors have layers of colors under them making them more dimensional. Do not be afraid to apply color, the more pastels you apply the better. I would really advice you to get the finger clots, small gloves for ur fingers when handling pastels. So that you won't get your hands dirty.
Colors used in this step - 108 , 109, 113, 119, 132,189
There will a lot of dust you might encounter, do not brush them.. that will lift the pigment from the paper , its better to keep blowing once a while.

Step 3 - Make strokes of colors and gently smudge with finger.. creating an even layer, blow off excess. Don't be afraid to go dark, you can always make highlights with pencils. Plus its easy to make lights over darks with pastels. If you have any area that is totally white I would advice not to touch it till the very end of pastel step since the dust will contminate the pure whites. Once you are done with the rest of the are, use a handy tak/sticky clean the full white area and then apply pastel . An electric eraser can also be used if you want to completely remove the color.

Re: Peach Rose - Pastel & CP's Step by Step demo

Step 4 - Once you have layed down the pastel its time to spray. I use a workable fixative , obviously since we have to work with cp's on top. I would recomment couple or more light layers of fixative..Just put ur finger in a corner and lightly rub , see if you are picking up the pigment, if its hardly noticable like a light powder then there is enough fixative else go over once more.
NOTE: how much ever u spray u will be picking up pigment its just how much is coming off is what important. if you spray very little then when u go over with cp's the pastels will come off and the result is very ugly so make sure the pastels are adhering properly.

When sprayed the pastels become darker , do not panic if u made a mistake, its still repairable.

This is how it looked after I sprayed. sorry I forgot to get the b4 version.

Re: Peach Rose - Pastel & CP's Step by Step demo

Final step - I went over with CP's after spraying. Pencils should be very sharp, light strokes, dont be hard on the paper , it might affect the pastel layer. slowly build up the color whever necessary . I worked darks to lights here using almost all of the pinks oranges and reds - carmine, poppy red, crimson lake, pink, blush pink, salmon pink, orange, pumpkin orange, henna & tuscan.

Peach rose - 9X12 oblong

Re: Peach Rose - Pastel & CP's Step by Step demo

Very fantastic demo! I've been experimenting with pastels and cp too. However, are you sure you really want to blow off the dust? I checked in the pastel forum and it says to tap the dust off into a waste basket or easel ledge. I've been keeping a dampish paper towel in my non-drawing hand (for me the right hand) to sort of sop up the dust so I dont breathe it in. Yes rubber gloves are helpful or those little finger things.

This turned out lovely. I havent done anything quite so sophisticated yet.

Thanks for showing us this Paapu.

Thanks Liz!

Joann , yes tapping sure does help! I have the habit of blowing even when using pure CP's , i dont use the drafting brush very often. But I guess tapping is better here since pastel's powder could be harmful if you breath them in.

Beautiful, Paapu! Thank you so much for the demo!

I'm sure I've got questions for you about it... coffee isn't quite working yet, so I'll just sit here in slightly muzzy awe.
