Question Before I even start...

I would like to ask for opinions on how to progress....

I have been asked to do a painting of Arum Lillies. What my friend is after is simple in essence, and I am yet to buy the flowers to work on the composition etc, however, my mind is boggling on the path to tackle the painting!

I have been browsing the site, and seen the wonderful results achieved through underpainting. Now, of course I note that this takes layers and layers of glazing and blending to achieve the final gorgeous results (and I fear my lack of patience wouldn't get me there either!)....but I wonder, before I even give in to my fear of the time involved (as am sure the results are always worth the time), on very light flowers such as Arums would it be possible to underpaint?

I wouldn't do an underpainting on Arums. They are essentially white with flecks of colour if I remember rightly. Also you haven't done underpainting before which I think will complicate the process. Is this a commission? If so congratulations.

I would paint the way you normally do. You can always add layers of glaze to get depth and pick out the highlights, etc. At a later date when you are curious have a go at underpainting.

Re: Before I even start...

Hi Carol

Thank you for your response.

You are spot on about the Arums; essentially white with flecks of colour, and I think the biggest part will be to give them the movement and depth they need.

I agree too about the underpainting - It is not the way for now, though it is something I will try at a later date for sure!

And yes, it is a commission, so that is exciting too. Once I get underway I will pop up some pics.

Thanks again!!

Cath
