Smile What's on Your Palette?

I have been painting in oils with knives since July ’05, only in recent weeks venturing outdoors for pleasurable PA work. I use W & N paints bought in 200ml tubes, satisfactory at this point. Recently, I moved from oil to Gamblin cold wax medium, wonderful in the field and better impasto.

This Forum is comprised of many members of varying depth of ability and experience from a multitude of geographic locations. I reside in So Califoria - USA and have the opportunity to pursue beaches & oceans, the deserts, mountains and more, all within in a reasonable drive!

Likely, all have been asked, “If you were stuck on a desert island with a choice of one (1) type food for your remaining days, what would that be?” Personally, I’ve come to “Thai” in recent years. Love that stuff! .......
Lately, I’ve asked myself, “What have become my favorite three (3) colors/paint/pigments?” … What colors do I look upon with particular relish, given the opportunity to use them? My W & N choices are NOT always found at my local chain art stores. They are: 1) Viridian Hue (Phalo Green), 2) Naples Yellow and 3) Indian Red.

Why? I consider the wonderful shades of Phalo and many days of experiencing the oceans, both, just gazing at it and free-diving from SoCal to Puerta Vallarta. I appreciate how a Naples Yellow sand compliments a Phalo ocean. Several months ago, I did my first desert scene, a remote dirt road among the Sonora Saguaro. The combo of Naples Yellow and Indian Red “knocked my socks off”, a nearly exacting reproduction of the desert floor.

SO, WHAT THREE PAINTS DO YOU PERSONALLY RELISH? Obviously, leave out “Black” and any “Whites”. Try to leave out the idea of “mixing” (this is assumed) and just consider:
“WHAT THREE PAINTS DO I REALLY LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING ON MY PALETTE?”

Re: What's on Your Palette?

I've come to love naples yellow for lightening but keeping the warmth of sunlight and also for mixing some really nice light greens, pale oranges, warm pinks transparent red oxide for taming greens and bringing warmth to dark areas without overpowering them, also nice mixed into ultramarine blue for grays and bringing an earthiness to reds and yellows when also mixed with white, Quin. Red for the most wonderful range of clean, clear purples, violets, lavendars, just wonderful for that whole family of color.

Re: What's on Your Palette?

3 you say? That is over half of my limited palette I use, I'll pick the favourite.

These are very generic, but all are stunning.

Cadmium Red, Cadmium Yellow and Cobalt Blue.

The three primaries, and arguably the best most pure versions of each.

Re: What's on Your Palette?

It's what we LOVE, not what we NEED, right?
1. Holbein's Light Blue Violet
2. Holbein Blue Grey
3. Rembrandt Sevres Blue (like ceruleun, but with more staying power)

I guess I'm a blue-nut! But theses blues are sooo beautiful.

I love Trans red oxide, cad red light, cad yellow medium, however, if I truly were limited to say five colors, they would be white, black, cad yellow lemon, alizarin crimson and FUB.

Oops ... Yes, meaning it's "what we love" and not what we need and/or tend to place on our palette nearly every time ... What 3 colors really turn you on and are much appreciated on your palette, given the opportunity to use 'em.

Re: What's on Your Palette?

I love cobalt blue, simply because it's so beautiful I want it on my pallette. I can usually find a place to use it almost undiluted in a picture.

Re: What's on Your Palette?

What I LOVE to see on my palette....another vote for Transparent Oxide red. I also love Mineral Violet, and Rembrandt's Sap Green. Yes, I know Sap isn't the most stable thing out there, but I love its color and consistency. It's a pretty green

Re: What's on Your Palette?

For me, it's cobalt violet deep, cobalt violet light, and cobalt blue. My only problem is, only cobalt blue is available in either acrylic or water-miscible oil paints.
