Use to denote nudity/mature subject matter Virtual Life Class No. 11 (Male Nude)

Right then...somewhat belatedly ( but I know you've all come to expect that by now) here we go with VLC 11.

Our model this time around is Ken, who is the boyfriend of new figure forum attendee Deahna, so I'd like to give both Ken and Deahna a hearty thanks for submitting the photos. I'd also like to point out that Ken has done his bit so Deahna...lets see some drawings from you . Although I must remember that in VLC 10 I only did 1 drawing of Mrs Shop...terribly slack so I'll not press that particular point too hard.

I think we've got some good poses here and Deahna took this set of pictures out in the great outdoors with good light so I anticipate some fine pictures to come out of these.

As always...everybody is free to join in...whether you are a regular, newbie or nervous lurker you are more than welcome.

Time for the traditional big red letters...just in case anyone that doesn't want to see a nude or two has missed all the warning signs thus far...

If you scroll down any further you will see reference photos featuring....

Male Frontal Nude Poses

I think that's all I need to tell you...break out your pencils and paper, pastels, paints or digy thingies and off we go....

Have fun...and thanks once more Ken and Deahna.

I cheated and drew that last pose yesterday in anticipation, I couldn't wait. I also drew a different pose from the same batch I sent you, but it wasn't chosen, so I won't post that one here. So... it looks like I'm already one up on you!

I was pretty happy with this 30-ish minute charcoal drawing last night, but now that I look at it again, it feels like the torso is too long. And possibly his left leg a bit too large. Anywho, I'll let the rest of you be the judges.

Deahna.... I think you have done a pretty good job here allover.

The only thing I think maybe you could look at is to think a little more in circular forms when you are sketching the limbs so foreshortened as they are here.... try to think in 'round' terms so we get more of the feeling we are looking down the arm, or down the leg.

You mentioned the left leg being a little large...... I think that is only if you compare it with the photo. Without comparing them, it reads okay to me, IMHumbleO.

Congratulations on being first in..

Re: Virtual Life Class No. 11 (Male Nude)

here's a second attempt...........a crop that's a bit more classical looking. Having fun playing with different media, but haven't really cracked it yet. Still think there's a better one in me.

2B & 4B pencil on cartridge ~ 20x30cm

Re: Virtual Life Class No. 11 (Male Nude)

Well, Ken feels so cheap and used (or unused, as it were...).

So... I begin classes this coming Monday, and that means I have to settle for dial-up internet in my temporary home near campus, which means no WetCanvas! for a while. I hope that the rest of you are just too busy at the moment, and that there will still be some nice pieces to come out of it yet. [I am hopefully bumping it back to the top, in case some of you simply missed it]

Kudos, sula, for being the only participant, and also Adair_P for the advice (which I will certainly apply to future foreshortened drawings).

Take care all.

I'm finally kid-free for a couple hours so I am about to embark on my first virtual life class. Getting paper and pencils now.....back later if I can get scans to work.

Re: Virtual Life Class No. 11 (Male Nude)

OK. Here's my first drawing in I don't know how many, many months. Not perfect, but I'm fairly satisfied with it. I've never drawn from the computer before so that was a little bit weird.

It's just a 6B pencil drawing on mediocre drawing paper. I apologize for the yellowish lighting. The flash photos were too shiny on a couple spots and I don't have anything set up for taking "real" art pictures yet. (Advice on taking digital pix of flat and 3-D work gladly accepted.)

My goal for this drawing was pretty much just to draw for the sake of drawing since I've been starving myself artistically for so long. (I have a 3 yr. old.)

My hope is that if I post and check the forums here and all over WC, that it will continue to stimulate my artistic appetites and longings and help me to put aside regular time for art so I am not so grouchy.

Re: Virtual Life Class No. 11 (Male Nude)

Deahna & Ken..... hang in there! It just takes a while for us all to finish our current projects and to get started on a new one..... at the moment we are just walking around the figure and imagining it on the page...... isn't that how all good artists start a Life study?? You did right to bump it back up..

Brad.... that 5 minute one is amazing.... I like those panels of filled in hatching.
The first one...mmmmmm..... maybe the photo has come out too dark..... or maybe a little heavy-handed with the laying on of the w/c pencil prior to the wash?....in parts.
I can see - but only just - some super reflected light in the shadows on his arm and thigh, so maybe it's a dark photo. Those w/c pencils are great, but once they're down and dry..........
The second one has a really nice feel and volume to it.

Dancingpopcorn
..... welcome to you. Those lovely squiggley lines tell me a lot about you as an artist! You have 'felt' your way around this piece, then went for it! (Sorry Ken.... do you still feel like you're being used??? )
Well done! We hope to see some more.

Re: Virtual Life Class No. 11 (Male Nude)

Hi chaps...
Yes...it has been a slow start to this one...I was actually thinking about bumping this up myself as I was driving about in the dark from one British town to another.

I have been too busy to find any sit and draw time over the last week or so (except for tonight ..when I went to class and failed completely to draw anything worthwhile) and I have been working on a painting or two.

Anyway...To the work so far...

Dancing Popcorn...what a great entry to the forum...this drawing doesn't look like the work of the artistically starved...I think you have produced a convincing drawing with good weight, shape and solidity. I like your relativly minimal use of tone and the energy with which it's applied. The foot looks a tad flat...the rise from toes to ankle not really indicated...but apart from that it's a beauty. Please do more drawing for the sake of it and add to those so far.

Brad...glad to see you in this one too...Pauline has covered all the bases on these I think...yep...number 1 a bit dark...3...really well observed and laid down for 5 minutes...but for me 2 is a great drawing...I love your pencil strokes in this one...I was a bit concerned about the concave dent in Ken's right shoulder blade in the drawing...so I checked and sure enough it's there ih the reference...but if anything I think you've made it a little strong. Other than that...what you're doing works for me.

Deahna...I know you had a head start but I like this. If Pauline hadn't have mentioned the foreshortening I wouldn't have noticed it myself...and I can be picky. Please post the other one you prepared...we can always add the photo.

Anyway...Ken and Deahna...thanks again for coming forward...many of the figure regulars have been noticably absent of late so I can only assume that they are quite busy...I know I have been but I will be joining in when I get some drawing time...My wee toddler may only be a third of the age of Dancing Popcorn's...but I'm sure he's every bit as time consuming.

Re: Virtual Life Class No. 11 (Male Nude)

Here's my next attempt.......Better this time I think. No camera this weekend so I had to scan it. I don't think the crop due to the scanner is quite as nice as the full sketch.

About 20x30cm charcoal on 1140 12SH watercolour paper, ~two hours
