Misty Morning

MY IMAGE(S):

GENERAL INFORMATION:
Title: Misty Morning
Year Created: 2002
Medium: Oil
Surface: Canvas
Dimension: 14 x 18
Allow digital alterations?: Yes!

MY COMMENTS:
I am going to work some more on the sabal palms, everything was getting too gummy so I want things to set a bit.

MY QUESTIONS FOR THE GROUP:
I am having problems with the shorelines. To me, they look like they are floating above the water. I do this sort of painting a lot and I notice it now on some of the others. A dark area underneath? Light area? Are they too horizontal? Maybe a curve towards me? Help!

Lorijo, I think you have a lovely painting here. I am always amazed at how high the palm trees in FL really are!

Your distant shorelines look real, you have pushed them back nicely. You are correct in thinking that bringing the foremost shoreline around toward you might break up some of the horizontal sameness. This would change how the foreground seems to take the viewers eye out of the painting, rather than bringing them around into it.

You might consider varying values and shapes of the darkest areas in the foremost shoreline and maybe bringing a few darker values up into the grass area as well.

The two shorelines on the left of your painting are very similar. To avoid this you might want to change the shape of one of them - maybe a stump or rock[s] - even in the water just out from the storeline.

Keep up the great work!

You already got good advice on the shorelines, so I will comment on something else that could make an improvement. Look at the interaction between the clouds and the trees. See how it almost looks like the clouds are in front of the trees! I think this is caused by the fact that the edges on the clouds are to hard - i.e. harder than on the trees. They also seem to be painted around the tree shape, I think it would help if we were to see some white/gray from the cloud peeking through - i.e. punch some holes with cloud color rather than sky color.
