A head study of a baby WIP

Oil on acrylic primed linen, 16x18.
RAW UMBER underpainting.
A head study of a baby (my nephew)

I intend turning this into a tutorial on the complete process of oil painting using underpainting. I will demonstrate the development of my painting in stages as a WIP (WORK IN PROGRESS). The first painting is what is known as underpainting using only raw umber.
Several color layers (WIP parts 2,3 and 4) will follow.
I used a proportional divider for transfering the photo to the canvas.

Comments and questions are welcomed.

First Color Layer.
The Hair was painted using ivory black and the background is thinned (with linseed oil) indian red over the raw umber underpainting.

Re: A head study of a baby WIP

SECOND COLOR LAYER.
In the third stage I worked more on the skin tones, the eyes and the ear. The white of the eye was painted with pure white, the red colors on the corner of the eyes are alizarin crimson and vermilion extra. The lips were painted with a skin tone and with alizarin crimson that was mixed with white. The ear was painted with an appropriate skin tone and the red color is a mix of alizarin crimson and burnt siena. The eyebrowes are mostly raw umber and burnt siena.

Re: A head study of a baby WIP

Your painting has improved a lot from your first posting. As a new painter I have found that babies are very difficult to draw, they have this tendency to look like old men. You may want to check the roundness of the eyes. Your doing great.

Dear Kline,
Thank you very much for the comments and for the remark for on the eyes. I hope i would be able to fix that in the next color layer. The main point here for me is to play with underpainting and skin tones. stay tones for the final result
