Autumnal Canal ET

What a coincidence; it's my birthday, a new forum for tempera, and I just finished this today. No name yet, its the D&R canal towpath just outside of Centerbridge, PA. Egg tempera, 12" x 16"

Re: Autumnal Canal ET

Wow, Jeff, what a wonderful combination of circumstances! Happy birthday, and congratulations on being the first to post a painting to the forum....and such a beauty to boot! I love the soft color and the path draws me right into the painting.

What surface are you using? I know nothing about egg tempera, so I'm looking forward to learning a lot!

Hey! Happy Birthday Jeff!

Your painting is gorgeous, absolutely. So glad you posted.

I also know nothing about working with ET ... except what I've seen in museums here abouts. Would love to learn.

That's another sweet painting, Jeff. I feel like I'm getting to know your neighborhood with each of the works of yours I see. A good place to be.

I used the standard et support, a 1/4" hardboard coated with traditional gesso. These days I get mine premade from www.realgesso.com. As far as I know, they're the only ones making them and I can't praise them enough. I can and have made my own, but as long as I can get them from Max I will.

David, this scene is just a few steps from Redfield's house, where I took the photo on this thread:
http://www.wetcanvas.com/forums/showthread.php?t=366080

The canal on the PA side is getting hammered from the recent floods. This portion actually doesnt have water in it anymore, just a shallow stagnant ditch with weeds. Pretty ugly, so I raised the water. Maybe someday it will be back.

Re: Autumnal Canal ET

Thanks so much, Jeff. Upon hearing your answer, it occurred to me that a reference thread on archival supports specifically for egg tempera would be a really good thing for the forum, so I started one here. If you'd be kind enough to add your knowledge to that thread, I'd really appreciate it and I'm sure the other members would too!

Re: Autumnal Canal ET

This is stunning!!! I've never used ET and know virtually nothing about it's handling, but I see the most amazing work being done with it (have always been a Wyeth fan...). Your painting is no exception and makes me want to learn more about it!
