Carousel Animal Project!

CAROUSEL ANIMAL PROJECT

According to the poll I took here at WC this past month, it seems that quite a few of us are interested in doing a Carousel Animal Project. So, here it is. Read on for the details, and most of all, have fun drawing!!!

PROJECT DETAILS:
1. Choose a carousel animal (any kind of animal, as long as it is from an actual carousel). I have provided a variety of images for you to choose from (see the links below). You are not, however, limited to these ref pics. You can use your own pics, or find one from another ref lib.

2. PLEASE be sure to credit the photographer of the ref pic you choose to use!! Be sure to do so in your initial posting to this thread, and make sure it is copyright free or that you have permission from the photographer to use the photo.

3. Your drawing/painting can be of any size and on any type of support you like.

4. Because this is a thread in the cp forum, please be sure to use colored pencils. You can also mix in other media, just make sure it is mostly colored pencil.

5. Please post all of the progress (WIP) of your work in this thread rather than each of us creating separate threads.

6. When you first post your WIP in this thread, please make sure you include the following info:
  • What type of support you are using (i.e. Stonehenge paper, Mi-Tientes, etc.)
  • What type of colored pencils you’re using, (and any other media you may be using as well)
  • What size your drawing/painting will be when finished
  • Your ref pic and who the photographer is.
  • Your drawing/painting, hopefully in the form of a WIP (work-in-progress).

7. Please resize your drawing/painting to be no larger than 500 pixels in any given direction.

8. There is no ending time for this project. You may complete your artwork at your own leisure.

9. When you complete your artwork, you may post the completed version in a new thread to show everyone else on WC! I just ask you not to post your entire WIP in a separate thread.

It will be great for all of us to be able to learn from each other’s experiences during this project. After all, that’s what a project should be - a learning experience!

Below I have provided links to as many carousel photos that I could find and that were copyright free. Feel free to be creative in your crops and edits of the pics. Better yet, if you want a real challenge, you can even create your own carousel animal by taking bits & pieces from different ref pics and putting them together into one carousel animal (I would strongly suggest that only advanced artists try this though). Make sure you post each ref pic you’re using and the names of each of the photographers.

Reference Picture Links:

My Stock Photo Site - I have uploaded 15 carousel horses for people to use as reference material if they so desire, more may be coming soon.

RWSewell’s Stock Photos
– Rob has up loaded photos of carousel horses from Battleship Cove and is willing to let everyone use them for reference pics!! Thank you Rob!!

Re: Carousel Animal Project!

I'm really looking forward to doing this project. Just have to finish my swan. Might take awhile to get the sketch done as I want to try a mish-mash of different carousel horses.

I'm in as soon as I finish my sunflower or give up on it whichever comes first.

Ah, Faula, you're going for the toughy, huh? Hehehe ...... I know you're not bored with that beautiful swan you're painting! Yup, you'd better get him finished first or Amira will never let me forget it. Besides, you've done such a beautiful job on him, it would be a crime not to finish him. I look forward to seeing your carousel sketch though.

Janet - No,no,no! No giving up on your lovely sunflower. Me, I just work more than one project at a time. That way, I can take a break from one and work on another one for awhile. Then I can go back to the first one with fresh eyes. But that's just me. You must finish the sunflower! We'll be here when you finish. It's going to take awhile to complete a carousel animal, at least for me it will. There's so many good choices, and I have more coming.

I hope to get my sketch done tonight or tomorrow, depending on when I finally decide which one I'm going to do. Maybe I should get out some darts and just pick which one to do that way.

Re: Carousel Animal Project!

I've decided, after much indeciveness, to go with a photo I took at Cedar Point. I didn't put this in my stock photo account because I knew I wanted to use it one day. It was between this one and a medieval horse. I REALLY want to do the medieval horse, but at the moment it's sooooooo complicated that I don't have quite enough time at the moment to do justice to it.

Now, what I can't decide on is the background. I think the colors on this one might look good on black, but I was also thinking of doing a creative multi-color splattered background as well (that would be on white paper). I'll need to go out and buy some masking paper to do it though ... as soon as I get paid on Monday that is. Anyone have any suggestions???????

I have edited the photo some, took out some stuff I didn't like, enhanced the colors and added contrast. So, this lovely palomino horse is the one I'm going to do.

BTW, if anyone wants some ideas on crops for these pictures, you might want to mosey on over to Scott's site to view his awesome carousel horses!

Re: Carousel Animal Project!

Nancy, I won't give up on the sunflower; however, I will make it my secondary piece and work both at the same time. The carousel horse that I will be working on will be my primary piece and I'm really excited about this one. Thank you for the great project!

Re: Carousel Animal Project!

Well, I made a start. This is new ground as I am doing this in Caran d'ache Pablos which I have only just got and havent tried before. They are lovely for detail but dont seem to blend as well as Karismas do.
I am working on dove grey stonehenge but I feel Pablos would benefit from a harder paper. Its 7 x 5 3/4 inch in size. I saw Nancys photo (thanks ) and just had to do it so here it is.

Re: Carousel Animal Project!

Great start Jo!!

You're way ahead of everyone here. I'll post your ref pic here for you so the rest of us can see where your wonderful painting is coming from. Of course, Jo made some edits in her photo editor program, which is more than fine. All of us should be doing that to our ref pics to some degree.

Love his eye and you've done a better job on the bridle than what's in the actual picture! You go girl!

Re: Carousel Animal Project!

This is my first session on this peice. It is from Nancy photo collectionn
It is on 8X10" black stonehenge, and prisma pencils. As usual I rushed it , and not to excited about what I have done so far. Most work needed on mane. If y'all dont think I am on the right track I might do another one, and take my time. Dont have a clue for the BG?

I like the composition of this reference photo, and the simlple lines, and lack of intricate detail. Remember I am working with 73 year old eyes.

Re: Carousel Animal Project!

Aloha everybody,
I thought I would give this project a try, and unfortunately I rushed too qucikly and too far. I have to begin teaching this coming Monday and i just really wanted to do something cool like this!! I chose the zebra picture and in my foolishness I wanted to do the background...which I really liked. (The photo is really attractive, I think)

Well the background has proven difficult!!! and now having to back to real world and prepare a lecture on insect hormones (sigh...) I decided to post it as it is and let you guys have a look and help the zebra if you can.

The pic is about 10 by 10 on Canson paper (probably a Huge mistake but I wanted to try it )

I am posting the original photo and the drawing...you can tell that love all the lights and stuff on carousels (they are so over the top) like riding in another world but actually reproducing that quality...maybe beyond me at this point
Thanks for looking
Ethel
