Raku Twisties - How do you do that?

I have just seen Val Cox's beads with Raku twisties in them, would someone please tell me how to do that? I have Raku frit but can't figure out how to make twisties with it.
They are just beautiful.

It is better to use R-108 Iris Orange (raku) rods. You can get them at Olympic glass and probably other places but that's the only place that I'm personally familiar with.

I just noticed you are in the UK. I don't know where you'd get it in the UK, but I know where you can get it in Germany at a good price. If you want the URL just send me an email.

Hi Lesley, there are many ways to achieve this effect, I'm sure. One method you may want to consider is taking a gather of clear, and running strips along the long side of the cane, all around the gather, then pulling this into a stringer or cane. Then when you twist this striped stringer as you apply it to your bead, you can get this look. Val

I haven't actually done it myself but I have watched others do it in person and on videos..... does that make me a voyeur - Oh dear??? \-))
Heat the end of a clear rod and use that to pick up as much frit as it will do. Melt that into a small gather then continue picking up frit and enlarging your gather until satisfied. Pull this into a stringer about 2-4mm. Use the stringer to stripe a clear rod (or gather) and pull that into a twisty. Use the twisty to lay on to your beads. Remember to twist the twisty as you lay it down to get the tight stripes.

Re: Raku Twisties - How do you do that?

First of all, That is a very nice bead Val .
I made a raku and clear rod out of raku frit and a clear rod.
I just kept heating the clear rod and rolling it in the frit over and over until i had enough color.
It almost looks like Boro, really cool effect.
I used it for the tail on one of my fish, it was the first fish sold at the last show we did, it turned out really nice with the raku fin.

Fabu tips; I wouldn't have thought to make a twistie with raku frit. I just did and I'm pleased with what happened.
Thanks, chicas/chicos!!!

Loads of tips there. Thanks everyone, Val thank you, now to give it a go.
Lucien I will try with the Raku stringer first, but might think about getting some rod. Will mail you for supplier in Germany.

Re: Raku Twisties - How do you do that?

Love that fish Mike! Gosh, I've got all these raku rods in a drawer and thought I'd NEVER use them all. I guess I'll be making twisties and giving this a try.

Thanks for a great thread!
Blessings,
Leslie
