A SEE Change!

I went to Randall's Island for the third straight day. . It's surrounded by water ( well it's an island ...it should be) and is a few degrees coolor than Manhattan plus some nice breezes. Only 10 minutes from my apt. and lots of interesting subjects. Hellsgate Bridge is a RR bridge and is very unusual
in its architectural style (solid looking!)
It took about 1.5 hours to get the bridge and the surroundings finished and then I waited for a boat to pass. While I painted the bridge there must have been 2 dozen boats of all sizes and shapes passing. Now when I needed one...no boats! Finally after waiting about 1/2 hr. a motorbaot comes along..not particularly interesting but I wanted to finish the painting...as it passed I quickly painted it in...it looked OK but it was very modern looking
and I like romance in my paintings. I started to clean up when I see this great red tug come around the bend...now what??? The motorboat was nice...it was hot...yes, no? Finally I just painted the tug in as it passed...right over the motor boat...glad I did it!

"Summer Colors", Hellsgate Bridge 11x14

THIS IS THE LONGEST PIECE OF WRTING I'VE EVER DONE ON WETCANVAS

How does Larry do it???

The tug is perfect! Great choice! I like the perspective you achieved on this piece.

He types with two fingers.

Very nice work, boss. I plan to walk near a bridge similar to that, later this evening. There is also a big lift bridge there for the big ships ... and also the little sailboats with tall masts. Quite funny, actually.

Lee, you know, I've thought about that a few times, but the light is never on the right side ... and it's so massive, I'd need to get far from it. I'll stick with those excuses.

Re: A SEE Change!

Lee. I love the composition... and as always.. very "clean" looking colour! You are brave to smack the boat in the like you describe. I always think about the possibility of putting moving things in when I paint, but usually chicken out. The work under the bridge is in the bottom close-up is nice.. I like how the one large girder in the FG here is slightly more saturated... it draws the eye.

Thanks Skip...actually the entire bridge was that color but it either faded or flaked off...for some reason only that piece is the original color.

Re: A SEE Change!

The tug makes the painting special, good thing you decided to hang around
a little while longer. The whole thing is very well done, but that tug...

Jim, if you're worried about the complexity of the bridge, just start small -
paint one beam!
