making scraper foil. (x-posted from drawing forum)

Hi

just wondering how you can make your own scraper foil. i quite like the reflective look but what do you use for foil and what do you use as 'stuff to scrape off'?

Why make it when it can be bought already prepared? Sorry, I'm on the lazy side. To scratch either my foil or regular scratchboards, I use a #11 exacto knife and what ever else works to get the job done, including, non-soap brillo pads, scratch tools, fiberglass brush, etc.

Good question, I "think" I saw them on Jerry's at different sizes. Another site that has the metallics is Nasco. It's a school supply so I don't know about the quality of the stuff, ie. student or professional grade.

Hope you don't mind me asking but I have never heard of scraper foil. Can some one please explain to me what this is?

I have one somewhere in the all media art forum...it's a copper. Basically, instead of the white clay media as a base, there is a metallic, I've seen silver, gold and copper. Copper and Silver are my favorites.

I'm not sure hat quality they are either, i assume not great as they only seem to advertised under childrens' stuff. However the ready prepared ones come pre printed with a design, i was looking for blank ones to do my own on. is that what you do Obedec?
if so whwere do you get em from?

Re: making scraper foil. (x-posted from drawing forum)

I have been trying different kinds of inks on tin foil pasted to stiff board, to try and make scraper foil. It's become more of a pastime than actually drawing on scraper board! I'm impatient to succeed tho, and get back to some good old scraping... Ive almost got it right, using Dala Drawing ink, which dries to a thin film on the foil, except it is slightly too resistant to scrape off finely, and is not good for fussy people like me who demand perfection! I'm now going to try diluting the Dala ink before applying to the foil, hope it works...any other inklings out there with a better ink solution, let me know! (Dala, by the way, is a South African brand of paint and ink products).
