Re: Theme Thread for July 15th-22nd
I took this a while back. I did a 20 mile hike (the last half was all uphill) and saw lots of interesting formations.

Desert, would you run right back up there and get a close up on that horizontal intrusion of what appears to be quartz laced with impurities such as iron. Gold is often found in such intrusions you know. Purely a scientific request of course.

The solid gray mass in the upper center of the photo, next to the blue bonnet, is formed by the same process that makes the formations in caves. This one formed in a small surface depression then was exposed by a road cut.

Re: Theme Thread for July 15th-22nd
Sorry about this KE but you opened the door.
Underfoot.
There is a place I know where gravity appears to be less than most places on the earth. Of course if the movement of water is slowed greatly it could produce the same effect. Offered for your inspection are examples of cave formations growing in all directions. Sorry for the poor lighting all I had with me at the time was a flash light and camera flash.
1.
2.
3.
4.
5. Note the upward bend starting on this living stone.
6.
Stay tuned for a few above ground shots coming next.

Are you sure we're still in Texas?
1. Result of poor erosion controll.
2. A few years of unchecked erosion.
3. How it all started.
4. Not far away the space men were landing and the local folks left a record of it.

Windbreaker:
I had to drive miles of rotten dirt road, brave dogs who tried to eat my car, and hike up and down a steep road to get that shot. I'm not planning on going back for a while, I think.
BTW, it probably is quartz, this desert is full of it.

Chalk: a soft, white, porous form of limestone composed of the mineral calcite, is also a sedimentary rock.

Re: Theme Thread for July 15th-22nd
Hello all... New to this forum, and to photography! Here are some rocks I snapped in Tennesee last month-
I recently 'rekindled' my interest in Photography after buying the first decent camera I have ever owned... Originally with the intention of taking reference photos and photos of my artwork, but I became interested in the photography in iteslf in the process!
