Primary and secondary references in landscape art?????

Hi guys,

We have been set an assignment in our class that has asked us to consider "how artists use primary and seconday references in their landscape work"?

Now I may be being stupid, but what would be considered a primary reference and what would be considered a secondary????

Any help would be greatly appreciated,

Dan
